Propecia causing bumps under nipples?

Guys,

I just stopped taking Propecia after going to a surgeon for a male breast exam. I had large bumps under each of my nipples. I was told by the surgeon it is a side effect of Propecia. Has anyone else experienced this? I have since stopped taking it and my bumps have gone down considerably. I took Propecia for about 1 1/2 years.

It sounds like you are experiencing gyno. People say it has to do with increased estrogen levels as a result of using finasteride.

That is what I am being told. I did not know what was causing it. Thanks....would you recommend cutting the dosage in half?

did propecia effect your sex drive at all?

if your only getting man boobs (Moobs) - get a hormone profile run so you can check whether or not your man boobs are from excess estrogen or prolactin...

You may simply be able to stay on propecia at a lower dosage and then add an aromatase inhibitor to the mix....

Somthing along the lines of DIM, grape seed extract, AIFM, cardio and yohimbe ES

i got these after quitting finasteride (don't know if it's related). I have not checked my estrogen levels yet, but my prolactin was unusually high(I even got a brain-MRI which was clean). Do you think this can be finasteride-related?

Finasteride can definitely mess with your prolactin levels so if you haven't been taking anything else I would say finasteride is the cause.
If your gyno is prolactin induced, you may be able to check this yourself (pending your pain tolerance threshhold and levels of prolactin).
Whilst not extremely accurate you can do the following:
Squeeze your nipple REALLY hard as if trying to milk it (or like a nasty nipple cripple at school).
If any fluid comes out of ANYWHERE on the nipple your gyno is likely from bad prolactin levels.
High intake of vitamin B6 could help... or speak with you doctor in regards to taking Selegiline or cabaser.
Disclaimer: do not go and just start taking cabaser or selegiline without seeing a Doctor first.... just like finasteride these have their own list of sides as well.

I'm seeing my Doctor on tuesday. I can't be 100% sure, but I'm thinking finasteride has really f****ed me up. My Doctor says that finasteride doesn't affect prolactin levels, but this seems like too much of a coincidence! It's funny how I just wanted to improve my hair a bit and now my entire body is messed up(dry skin, tired face, loss of muscle mass..). Oh yeah, my hair looks 10x worse too :gay:

finasteride can screw with your prolactin levels.... go to propeciahelp dot com and have a read about the hormone pathways finasteride messes with.....
One thing leads to another and then you're not only growing moobs from higher estrogen levels but also lactating from prolactin..... (ok that's an extreme case... but it can happen).
Seeing your Doctor is a good idea....

Are you sure about that? It says in the Proscar monograph that "Finasteride had no effect compared to placebo on circulating levels of... prolactin". It also says the same in this study - Steroids 1998 Apr;63(4):208-13 Effects of the 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor finasteride on serum levels of gonadal, adrenal, and hypophyseal hormones and its clinical significance: a prospective clinical study. Uygur MC, Arik AI, Altug U, Erol D, Urology Clinic of the Ministry of Health, Ankara Hospital, Turkey.

hey pondle -

I have my own baseline tests from before I tried finasteride (for a second time around with failure due to sides) vs whilst I was on it (admitedly for only 6 weeks) that completely contradict the above study.
Finasteride was the ONLY internal supplement I was taking for the period so I know for a fact that it was the cause of my increased prolactin levels.

Don't have time right now but I will try find some info on how finasteride can indirectly screw with prolactin levels.

Did you consult a Doctor about these probs (I suppose you must have if you got a series of tests)? What did he/she tell you?

Sure did....
I got baseline tests done on most things:
FSH
LH
Prolactin
Progesterone
Oestradiol
Testosterone S
SHBG
DHEAS
DHT
and even a 24hr cortisol urine and blood sample.

Prior to finasteride I already had very high testosterone levels and was on the high scale of oestradiol. DHT was mid range
After 6 weeks on .5mg of finasteride (which I dropped back halfway through to .25mg ) my testosterone was through the roof, my oestradiol was now well above normal range, prolactin had almost doubled and cortisol was up considerably as well. SHGB dropped... Felt like sh*t...

All the Doctor said was to stop taking finasteride and that we'd run tests again in a month or so to make sure my hormones were going back to normal.
I questioned her about using things like spironolactone and nizoral in the mean time and whilst she had no problem with minoxidil... didn't want me to use nizoral or spironolactone for fear of any systemic absorbption whilst things rebalanced.

I'm still trying to find how the pituitary gland and prolactin are affected by finasteride... as I said before... I don't believe it directly screws with prolactin but but does set off a chain reaction that can stuff with it

Edit - while on finasteride - DHT was nearly non-existent

Hi there!I'm taking propecia for 2 years now +- and a year back i developed a lump behind my left nipple and a smaller one behind my right one. I definitily don't have the other sexual side effects so...i dont know...i'm taking 1.25 mg but i will change to 1mg...i read that the people who developed this only have treatment with surgery but i think its not worth i prefer continue using propecia because my hair is fine now,its estabilize...
What do u think?
