Propecia for 2.5 months - Add minoxidil?

I'm 26, turning 27 in June. I noticed my hairline receding sometime in the last 10 months or so. I also noticed my crown thinning out and a small bad spot appear.

4 months ago I started using Nizoral to initially combat dandruff but continued to use it after reading this board. 2.5 months ago i start using propecia. Should I hop on minoxidil? I have 3 bottles of foam but I would prefer not to use them if propecia will work well enough.

Your hair really doesn't look bad at all. I am not even sure if you have male pattern baldness. Most people will have a slight recession of their hairline as they get older, which is often called a "mature hairline." From the looks of it, I doubt your hairline would recede any further.

2.5 months on finasteride is not enough time to see if it's working or not. You have to give finasteride up to a year to accurately gauge its results. During that time, it will stop any further loss and it will thicken up your existing hairs. It may even regrow some of the hair you've lost.

In my opinion, I think you should hold off the minoxidil until you can see if finasteride is doing anything. minoxidil is only for those who need regrowth and it doesn't look like you need a lot of regrowth. Maybe just some thickening and maintenance, which finasteride will do for you.

that's refreshing to hear. i think i'll just stick it out on propecia for awhile and see how things progress.

i hope you're right about the mature hairline. i'm just a bit freaked out, as am i sure many others are, about how quickly my hair has changed in the last 6 months or so. it's very surreal to see this happening to my hairline (and bald spot) over such a short period of time.

any other feedback is much welcome!

Actually I wouldn't even use propecia if I were you. Only if you're losing significant amounts of hair per day I'd consider propecia.

really?

i don't think i'm losing that much hair daily. i don't keep count but think 5-10 hairs, or more, fall out in the shower daily, plus 3-7 when i style my hair, and probably more throughout the day but i like i said, i don't really pay attention to it.

i started taking propecia because my hair suddenly changed from a straight hairline, to the u shape it is now, with the temples slightly receding.

also, i wanted to fill the bald spot that has grown from nothing to what it is now in a matter of 10 months or so

why should i not take propecia? i thought the idea was mostly retention and preservation, both of which i am interested in

on a side note, i noticed my hair thinning out after taking the propecia, especially when it was much shorter, but it's not really noticeable at all now that i have grown it out some.

Our hair and amount of loss is pretty damn similar, dude. I got on Propecia about 6 weeks ago, also on nizoral. While I hope both of our hairlines are just maturing, you may want to do some investigating to gauge things better.

Check you scalp out for miniaturization. For instance, when I part my hair, if I look really closely in the mirror, I can see a few white miniaturized hairs within my mop going against the grain - too small to be styled. Not a good sign, means its less likely to be just a maturing hairline from what I've read.

Another thing is you say you don't notice shedding. Well, do a little experiment. Run you fingers through your hair for a few minutes, and see if hair comes out on them. Roughly count how many. Everyone lose hair when styling or in the shower, but simply running your fingers through your hair shouldnt pull out multiple hairs on every try unless you are probably experiencing male pattern baldness.

All hope is lost! Judging by the pics you need to schedule a hair transplant ASAP. I highly recommend Dr Armani even though it would set you back 20K
Just kidding bro, your hair looks awesome and most people on this forum would kill to have hair like yours. Stick with propecia and nizoral and don't jump on the minoxidil bandwagon yet. I think you should be fine using only 0.5 mg of Propecia for the first 6 months to a year since it's almost as effective as 1mg. Plus you save money this way too!

i definitely have miniaturized hair, both black and white, on my temples and close to my hairline. i also notice hair that is missing from my hairline, i.e. when i examine closely, i can see empty holes where hair should/would have grown out of before.

i took a shower roughly an hour ago. i tried doing this, as you suggested, and 25 hairs fell out

In your case, I'd say skip the foam. Use it to regrow diffuse areas, but your hair looks dense, so there is no point. Propecia and Nizoral will probably keep what you have.

If you want to lower the hair line corners a bit, you can dab a little foam there, but you might just get half inch peach fuzz, which might make you look like you are balding. Right now most people would not think you have hair loss.

for those that have had success with propecia, how many months did it take for hair to regrow (if it did at all) on your crown? i feel like the hole in the back of my head is getting worse, not better

Update:

The little bald spot in the back of my head seems to have been growing - everywhere else i'm ok with.

I'm thinking about getting on foam now, but not too sure yet.

I'll post some pics later

i dont want to scare you, but that was pretty much the same state my hair was before i really started to go bad.

lucky for you, you have already started propecia and i started AFTER i loss hair. i had regained and maintained, but it's def not as thick as it was before like what you have now. so i'd stay on the propecia, especially if you got male pattern baldness in your family history.
