Hi,

Can anyone please tell me if Propecia maybe initially gives oily skin, scalp, and hair? I have not experienced any oily skin, scalp, and hair while on Avodart. Would anyone know why this is so?

Thank you.

Yes. During the first few weeks there is an increase in free testosterone since Propecia is inhibiting the binding of Testosterone and 5-alpha reductase enzyme to form DHT. So the T has nowhere to go. It results in more oily skin in many people, especially in the face region.

oh ok...........now i know i'm not crazy because my hair seems oilyer and more limp or "thinner". plus my face has been a little more oily as well.

my hair also has been seeming shinier, but i guess that's from the oilyness.

So allow me to ask, does this go away after the first few weeks? And should i expect heavy shedding soon? I've been on Propecia for 2 weeks. let me know. thanks!

If your oil glands don't go nuts in the presence of testosterone (you got through puberty with no spots) then you wont have a problem.

Dr Peter H. Proctor, PhD MD, response:

"Yes, Propecia can occasionally cause paradoxical hyperandrogenic symptoms such as increased skin oiliness. This is thought to be secondary to the reflex increase in testosterone that happens with antiandrogens. Arguably, the reason you did not experience it with Avodart is that the latter drug also inhibits type-1 5 alpha reductase, which seems to play a significant role in the oil gland."

That sucks to hear, my hair/scalp is normally real oily to begin with. I have had a box of proscar sitting in my room for over a month. I have been wanting to do some blood tests before starting. Is there anything that can be used topically or orally to reduce the oily problem?
