Same sh*t, different dosages.... Propecia is a 1mg finasteride pill. Proscar is a 5mg finasteride pill. Some split a Proscar pill into 4 or 5 pieces and take one piece per day - achieving the same dose as Propecia. Proscar is generally much less expensive PER DOSE.

This is partially true.

The fact is, Proscar, when taken at a full 5mg dosage, does INDEED reduce more dht that a 1mg Propecia pill.

With increased dosage, the side effects also are increased.

Propecia was studied to be safe and efficient at reducing DHT in amounts capable of maintaining or restoring lost hair.

Propecia is the only pill approved by the FDA for hairloss.

Splitting Proscar into quarters or fifths is just as effective. They are the exact same chemical manufactured from the exact same company, Merck.

Let's put it this way: side-effects are undoubtedly proportional to the degree of DHT reduction, at least at these smaller doses. So if Proscar reduces DHT only slightly more than Propecia, then the side-effects from Proscar are also probably only slightly worse than Propecia.

If you have a pulse, you can handle it. Get a pill cutter or a razor blade.

what blocks type 2 DHT and does this need to be blocked?

Finasteride inhibits 5a-reductase type 2. It's the version which is responsible for hair loss.

so why is DUTasteride better? it blocks type 1?

Not only does it block type 1, it blocks type 2 more completely than finasteride, at the standard doses of both drugs that are commonly used.

The peesh is not the final solution.

Balding seems to be a complex interaction of numerous goings on within our bodies. It may be silly to be looking for one option to curtail alopecia.

Attack on all fronts!

Sadly I think we still do not know what all these fronts are.
Sneaky baldness.
