When my derm was prescribing me Propecia, I asked about the "sheds" that everybody keeps mentioning here. He said, that out of everybody he prescribes it to, VERY few people shed hair. Is this shedding just a phenoemon for those on this board, or is it common for everybody to experience it..or could it just be that the most vocal people on propecia/finasteride are those that happen to shed and freak out?

Of course it is not limited to those on this board, but yes people with problems are much more "vocal" then those who take their pill and see great results.

Sheds happen on finasteride but not in the majority and in those that do shed it is not necessarily finasteride that causes it. male pattern baldness can strike in shed waves on or off of finasteride. If you read up on the phenomenon of shedding on finasteride you will see that it went unnoticed at first in the trials, but later cases started showing up.

Personally I was shedding a lot of hair when I first started taking finasteride, but now it seems more like a normal shedding cycle. So for me it looks like after nearly 3 months finasteride is starting to show signs of working.

Dinzy is right. Also - maybe a lot of people just dont stress as much as people who hang out here do. Maybe they notice it but dont think about it or worry about it as much. Trust me when I say I know tons of guys like that.

Shedding is a sign that your hair is responding to the treatment, so I would say its a lot more common than not, but it also has a lot to do with the cycles. Shedding is only going to be noticeable if a larger # of hairs just happen to synch up and go dormant at the same time. Thats when you really notice it. If the ebb and flow of the cycles is off kilter a little, you may not even notice it as much.

Lots of factors come in to play in the reporting of shedding.

I think that my hair is shedding from Propecia, ive been on it for nearly a month. I think the hairs that are shedding tend to be thinner than my average hair.

Is that a good sign?

It is difficult to say. It is possible that the crappy hairs are responding and thus shedding. It is also possible that they are male pattern baldness hairs that just happened to enter telogen 2 months before treatment.

Either way at this stage in your treatment shedding crappy weak hairs is not a bad sign and that is all that should matter to you.

I am on Finasteride although I have a different response. I don't lose many thin hairs, I seem to shed the nice looking healthy hairs. I am confused. These are good, healthy hairs that fall out that do not fall out when not on Finasteride. Very confused.-Tim Timallen45@hotmail.com
