ok, so ive been on propecia for about 2 months. i have noticed a considerable reduction in hair loss, and am confident of some significant/noticable improvement over the next 10 months. BUT my question is: given that you need to stay on propecia/finasteride to benefit from the treatment, how long are you expecting to take the drug? for the rest of your life? until you have gained a considerable amount of hair? or when? im confused and worried that i may have to take this drug for decades possibly for the rest of my life, i dont care about thecost, more about the long term effect on my body. opinions on length of usage?

Well, something better may come along before you actually die.

The way see it, finasteride is my way of holding onto my youth. I don't care if my hairline recedes when I'm 50. But I'm damn sure gonna try to hold onto every hair possible while I'm still young.

i think it matters even in old age. I think old women prefer old men with hair. i think most wives would treat their husbands differently, unfortunately. but you won't care as much in old age because they don't look good either. it matters now when your skin is young and you can still get hot women (or men, whichever).

bryan says taking propecia from age 20 onward almost eliminates the possibility of ever getting an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer. i don't know how he knows that since propecia just came out in 1996. extrapolating from people who started at age 40? measuring prostates of 30 year olds? perhaps people were cutting proscar before propecia came out? what really sucks about loosing hair before you are 18 is you might need that dht for puberty, since size also matters. but minors can still use minoxidil and other stuff.

yeah, but if i can just keep my hair until implants are affordable, i'll be fine.

if propecia was the last hair loss product to ever be developed till the end of your life then yes.

There's sure to be more solutions around the corner.

Also with Hiar multipication coming soon, you can theoreitcally plug a head full of non DHT sensitive folliciles onto your head and then you wouldn't need to use Propecia to lower your DHT as the hairs that have been cloned and transplanted aren't sensitive to DHT.

when will hair multiplication be available? and the cost? i guess your right, having hair in your youth is important, everyone else has a full head of hair so why should i be receding? so young! hopefully propecia will be redundant when something better and safer comes along

But HM would give a few years of good hair.

Hopefully it will do a bit more than that...

No, extrapolating from the pseudohermaphrodites. The younger you are when you start taking finasteride, the closer you obviously get to the same experience as the pseudo's.

BTW, another study I read pointed out that castration PRIOR to the age of about 40 (I hope I'm remembering that age correctly) will also prevent prostate cancer, but not necessarily castration AFTER that same age.

DHT will come back

The reason you need to continue to take Propecia until something better comes out or until your transplant DHT-resistant hair to the top of your head (which should ONLY be done after Propecia/minoxidil or something else stop working!) is because once you stop taking Propecia, your body will go back to it massive pre-Propecia DHT levels, which consequently thins your hair and stops their growth. So as soon as your off of it, DHT will attack your hair again.
No serious long-terms side effects from Popecia have been found yet.
