Propecia user thinking of switching...

I have been using propecia for about about two years now. I have recession in my hairline like the Norwood 2. This summer I have had a few comments about my vertex becoming noticeabaly thinner, and I am thinking of switching to Dutas. This vertex thinning must mean my propecia is not doing the trick anymore...

I have few concerns about Dutas:

1) Is it relatively as safe as taking propecia?
2) Does propecia do anything that Dutas does not or is Dutas all around better?

My current regime is Rogain 5% nightly only, Propecia, Nizoral, Nano shampoo, and soon Folligen. I am looking to maintain at least what I have and maybe fill in my receding hairline a bit.

I recently made the switch to dutas after hearing many good things people have posted on this forum. Dutasteride, apparently has stronger and more beneficial effects on hair regrowth and maintenance. However, many people have also stated that they feel that the temple regions have become thinner after dutasteride. I cannot say yet for myself but I believe that it can benefit me better.

If you responded well to propecia for the last 2 years without any significant sides, than I don't really think dutasteride will suddenly cause a huge problem. Check out the posts on this forum to get a better idea.

the side effect profile of Avodart does not seem to be much different from propecia. I think it is better all around. My only advice is to put green tea extract in your minoxidil or your folligen and apply that to the front of your head as an androgen receptor blocker, just in case the front is more sensitive to testosterone than DHT like some people speculate.

Thanks for the replys,

I have had no side effects while taking finasteride but some docotors I see hassle me to get blood work done. They always tell me I'm a guinea pig, so avodart has me a little more worried about what they will tell me next.

P.S.-- My dad was about a Norwood 6 at 24, I am 24 now and at worst a Norwood 2.5 so something must be working.

how can they call you a guiny pig for using finasteride? It has been on the market since 1996 and has been long before that as proscar, and thousands of men have been tested in FDA trials.

If you are overweight, then you really need the liver tests, even if you are not on finasteride. But if you are in good shape, I would not worry. But if your have insurance, then why not.

I dont think most of the doctors I see understand my situation. They always suggest not taking anything or say my hair looks fine. And yeah I agree, people have been taking finasteride for a long time now. Can we say the same thing about Avodart?

As for getting blood work, no I am not over weight. I only weigh 155 at 6 feet so I am not a huge guy. And I am Canadian so I dont have any worries about insurance its all free!

yeah, you look fine now. the reason to get on the meds is so you stay that way. I think avodart is safe. it is much newer though.
