Hello i have currently been taking propecia for around 3 years with great success altho withing the last 3 monthes i have been getting an ache in my prostate and urethra its bareable but still there, went to the doctors and said i have prostatitis, after doing some research found it could be due to propecia. Has any one else experienced this side affect and should i quit taking propecia now or see if it goes away any advice would be much appreciated!

Did your doctor actually test you for prostatitis, or did he diagnose you based on symptoms alone? Did they indicate this was a bacterial infection or chronic inflammation?

There have been no studies that I’ve seen that indicate finasteride cause prostatitis. However there have been a few case reports and the folks over at propeciahelp seem to think there is a pretty strong connection. It’s plausible that atrophy of the prostate due to 5ARI inhibition could lead to prostatitis but that’s based on “yeah, I guess it sort of makes senseâ€￾ instead of anything concrete.

Has your doctor recommended a treatment or suggested you come off finasteride? It might be worth trying coming off for a few months, but talk to your doctor before you do anything.

Not sure about prostatitis but I know Propecia has its side effects. The FDA actually just updated the labels, and apparently it can cause sexual dysfunction

Hello yes the doctor told me to stay on propecia for the time being altho he didnt really no to much about the drug, had blood test done waiting for the results, iv just got in a new realtionship and have been having sex at least twice a night so i think this may have contributed to it from reading causes of prostatitis in young men. Think im going to just lay off for a couple of weeks and see how it goes then if it continues maybe stop the propecia for a while.

I am no expert but I know that chronic prostatitis can be caused by a variety of things including androgen imbalances. Propecia certainly does knock your androgens out of balance so I dont think its a stretch to say that it could have contributed to your prostatitis.

I would follow your doctor’s advice on how to treat the issue. As mentioned, finasteride does shift hormone levels in the body, which may potentially contribute to the condition. However, this is not a known side effect and it would be best for you and your doctor to rule out other possible causes before considering finasteride to be a cause.

It probably won't hurt your hair to come off finasteride for a month or two to see if it has contributed to the issues, but again, only do this if you and your doctor agree it's the necessary step to take.
