Question about 5-alpha-reductase.

Is it known what causes/creates 5-alpha-reductase in the body? I was reading one of the things and it said testosterone and 5-alpha-reductase form DHT. Now is 5-alpha-reductase just a byproduct of testosterone or is it separate and come from another source in the body?

5-alpha-reductase catalyses the formation of DHT from testosterone (for non-scienbos - it changes testosterone into DHT). It is a enzyme encoded by your own genes!
