I'm 33 and I've had very slow and nonaggressive hair loss for years. It's finally at a point where I'd like to start doing something about it. It's diffuse and thinning asymmetrically, which is really what bothers me the most.

I've decided to start taking the meds and see how that goes for a year. I've read that it's mostly to halt progression, but it's not uncommon for some people to experience a small, but noticeable, amount of regrowth while they take the meds.

From what I can tell, a lot of people are put off by the side effects. The one that seems the most damning is the gynecomastia. If I took the meds and I was one of the rare people who had this effect, does it go away when I stop taking the pills? And if so, how long does it usually take?

Also, it seems like dutasteride is the superior product for hair loss. How come more people don't take that over finasteride?

In my case I have been with finasteride for many years. Two years ago I noticed a drop in my hair and began to inform myself again. I knew Dutasteride (I didn't know it before) but when I read that there were people who had lost hair on the front when they changed and when I read that it is more powerful I assumed that its secondary ones would be worse.
Definitely,
1 when he started treatment 12 years ago he did not know about Dutasteride
2 fear of worsening my frontal.
3 fear of worse side effects

Use topical instead. Bad idea to use oral meds. Try topical finasteride first.

Does the topical stuff not have any of those side effects? Only the oral meds?

Alright, that sounds good. But do you happen to know the answer to my question? If I stop taking finasteride, do all the side effects eventually go away? Conventional wisdom would seem to say yes, but in researching, I've ran across people who are vehemently against finasteride, and I don't understand why they would be if they could just stop the meds and the sexual/gyno side effects stop. It makes me think that they might linger.

I used oral duta and i produce very little semen. I switch to topical now to lessen this Side effect. I cant answer your question Because nobody knows. Time will tell.

If you take finasteride, officially speaking you have about a 2-3% chance of getting side-effects. If you discontinue the drug, the side effects will most likely stop. In those 2-3% of people who experience side-effects, a small proportion of them complain that the side-effects didn't cease even after stopping the drug. This has never been confirmed to be due to finasteride, though, in a clinical setting - it's all anecdotes.

Ah, this is what I was looking for. Thanks so much. Do you know why dutasteride hasn't overtaken finasteride as the more popular hair loss treatment drug? I have an appointment with my PCP tomorrow, and I was going to ask for a prescription and I couldn't decide on which one to ask for.

Dutasteride is less popular as it has a more profound affect on 5-AR - potentially increasing the risk of side effects. It's also not that much more effective than finasteride for a lot of people, so many see no reason to switch.

If you use topical finasteride, don't you become a danger to random unsuspecting women who may be pregnant or about to be? You might leave traces of topical finasteride everywhere.
Yes but use it once daily and wash it out after 4h. Use at Night before bed time. If u sleep in the same bed as your wife or girlfriend that could be a problem.
