Question about hairpiece hairloss.

Hi LKloss

No, it won't cause further hairloss. I have been wearing a hairpiece for 4 years, and I still have a front tuft of hair under the front of my piece, which I have to shave off every week when I clean and reapply the piece. It is still growing as strong as ever.

So far as I can tell, the only thing that would cause further loss is if you pull on the growing hair, by not releasing the glue before removing your piece, or by using clips for a long period.

Incidentally, there is a forum specifically for hair replacement. If you have other questions about wearing a hairpiece you may get a quicker answer if you post them there.

good luck

I think traction alopecia is only an issue if you are securing your hairpiece with clips. That is rather old-fashioned now, and I haven't heard of any younger guys doing this. Everyone nowadays uses glue and/or tape. That way, you will be shaving any hair which is still growing under the hairpiece area, so there is no stress on the hair.

Good luck with your move.

Hi LKloss

I think all the tapes are safe. The thing you should avoid (or, at least, which I avoid) is epoxy hard bond glue.

Even if you are not going to show hairline, it's nice to have a hairline which you can show without embarrassment (eg if the wind is blowing hard, or you're travelling in a convertible). 3 mil. tape is the best for hairlines. It is not the strongest, but it is very fine and invisible. For the sides and back I would recommend Walker No Shine tape, although there are lots of decent ones.

Have you found a good place to order your first unit?

Ghostbond and Supertape are both safe.

I get 6.5 days from 3 mil tape (which is how long I wear between changes) but everyone's body chemistry is different, so you will have to experiment.

Supertape and 3 mil should not damage your lace. Just make sure you soak them well with alcohol to break the bond before you try to remove them from your hairpiece.

i haven't tried Superhairpieces, so I will be interested to hear how it works out for you when you start wearing.

good luck

You can apply the tape to your scalp first, but it will be difficult to get the edge in exactly the same place as the edge of the hairpiece. That doesn't matter too much at the back and sides, because the join will be covered by the hairpiece hair anyway, but at the front it is quite likely that there will be an overlap of bare tape or unattached base. If you want a good result, it would be better to attach the front hairline tape to the hairpiece.

You can lower the density just by pulling hairs out. Soak the hairpiece in warm water for a few minutes, and you will find the hairs can be pulled out fairly easily. Go gently though - it is easy to overdo it.

good luck

You can apply the tape to your scalp, but it will be difficult to get a perfect match between the edge of the tape and the edge of the piece. That doesn't matter too much at the back and sides, because the join will be covered by the hairpiece hair anyway, but it could be a problem at the front hairline - you will either get a strip of bare tape showing or a strip of unattached base. So it might be better to put the tape on the unit for the front hairline.

You can pull hairs out of the piece if the density is too high. Soak it in warm water first, and then the knots will pull out more easily. Do it very gradually though - you don't want a patch of bald lace.
