Question on what to pair with proscar (nioxin or rogaine)?

I was able to get a prescription from my physician for finasteride 5mg (proscar) thankfully. What should I use in combination with proscar to get the best results? Thinning seems to be greatest on the crown and near the front. My hair cutter said to use nioxin 3 system shampoo because it will help thicken the hair you already have, but im not sure If I buy that. I was thinking perhaps finasteride + rogaine for the crown.
