So I've been experiencing a receding hairline by the temples for about 6 months, and the results are noticeable. As I'm only 24 years old, I'm considering using finasteride to halt the hair loss until I'm about 30, and then accept my fate. But when I contacted my doctor today, she told me that while she would give me a recipe for finasteride if I demanded it, she strongly adviced me to further research the negative side effects before committing to the drug. I've been reading a lot about finasteride recently, but I decided to follow her advice and I want to ask you all about some particular side effects, and if someone has experienced them (and if so, to what extent).
First of all, infertility. How common is this side effect? Has anyone experienced it? This would be a deal breaker.
Second, all the sexual side effects, including erectile dysfunction, impotence, trouble achieving an orgasm, loss of interest in sex. How common are these? I assume at least some people on here have experienced them. Please tell me if so!
My hair is still thick for the most part. It's only receding at my temples, and at this point not many people (if anyone) except myself will probably have noticed it, due to my hairstyle. However, most studies and discussions of finasteride only concern hair thinning at the scalp, and not a receding hairline at the temples. But I would be correct in assuming that finasteride, too, halts the recession of the hairline, correct? If so, I wonder if I can expect 1 mg of finasteride every day to completely halt my hairloss (once it's taken effect), or will it only slow it down? I am aware that it doesn't stop the hairloss for life and only works as long as you take the meds, but is it known to completely halt hairline recession is what I'm asking.
I'm very thankful for any replies. Please tell me all about your experiences with finasteride (even/especially the bad ones).
Also: can I expect good results from only using finasteride? I'm not interested in any meds that force me to completely change my everyday life. And I read somewhere that 0.5 mg is almost just as effective as 1 mg - can anyone confirm or deny this?
EDIT: Is it true, like a lot of people on this website and others seem to say, that you can't fully recover from the negative side effects of finasteride?
