Quitting Saw Palmetto And Going On Finasteride?

Hi. I have been on saw palmetto for over a year now. It isnt doing anything for my thinning hairline. I have finasteride in my hands right now. But should i ease off of saw palmetto before i start finasteride? If so, how long should i wait for my body to be okay when taking finasteride?

I have heard of stories of people going straight onto finasteride while they were using saw palmetto for long periods of time before hand after only giving up saw palmetto for a week or so. And their hormones got completely screwed up and they became suicidal and depressed. Is this likely to happen?

saw palmetto hasnt been shown to do anything for hairloss. its far too weak, if at all, only 30% of dht is being inhibited. if your hair matters to you i wouldn't overthink it and start with finasteride in the near future

i don't think so. while there is evidence for pfs, there is to my knowledge none of the "crash" and especially not after saw palmetto. that just goes to show how powerful the placebo effect is that some people crash running palmetto. its kind of ridiculous in my opinion. so no i would ease off, just take finasteride when you are ready for it

Friend, don't listen to Peterson, he's got his own thread in the side effects section and is suffering himself from impotency, severe depression and mental impact. There is a lot evidence on finasteride side effects and they dont seem so rare. I've read about a guy who has permanent reduced sperm activity even long after stopping finasteride and the doctors cant help in that case and dont know what to do. So if you start finasteride do regular tests and be very careful.

run some blood tests before going (make sure you dont have low T and high estrogens without medication) and finasteride should be prescribed by a doctor.
I agree with petersonkj about saw palmetto, i dont know why it is associated with hairloss medications

This simply isn’t true. Any substance which sharply reduces androgens can induce what is currently termed Post Finasteride Syndrome. The man in the following video developed the disease after use of saw palmetto

Sadly, he committed suicide. If you have the (what is suspected to be genetic) predisposition to develop this disease, no amount of blood tests prior to using finasteride will help you.

Exactly how do we know that the reduced sperm activity is due to using finasteride and not due to getting older? If a hundred men drink a glass of water every day for six months one of them is going to develop reduced sperm activity. That doesn't mean water causes reduced sperm activity.

Saw Palmetto is crap and I would recommend everyone to drop it. It has 0 effect on hair.

It's toxic for your liver (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2856058/). I experienced it and discovered it via blood tests (abnormal bilirubin level).

Besides, it has similar sides (probably less intense) to finasteride. I felt decreased sex drive and ball ache over a month. Nothing persistent though.

Not that I am a fina advocate but you might as well just go straight to the effective treatment if you are going the AA route.

Edit: or CB which seems to induce less sides (but with questionable efficiency at the moment)

I was on saw palmetto for about a year. I noticed I was having trouble getting an erection. Took around another year post treatment for me to fully recover. So I guess I will never try finasteride then lol

@petersonKj Source for 30% reduction in DHT with palmetto? Thats not "little" by any means. Thats halph as strong as finasteride

@ZZmop Do you believe post-finasteride syndrome happens because 5ar-enzymes never recover fully after stopping medication? I would really like to see the blood results of someone who thinks he is experiencing the disease. That would be interesting

lol you people don't know anything, there are daily fluctuations in your androgen levels that are much higher than 30%. soldiers who are in iraq and endure lots of stress and sleep deprivation can get their testosterone cut in half, and test is of course a lot more important than dht. SP is not even enough to reduce prostate hyperplasia symptoms or hair loss

if you really want to know how insane you are look at the placebo group in the finasteride studies. even the placebo group occasionally has -10% drop in dht. this is just proof of how overflow the finasteride sides sh*t is, these people would get them even on sugar(as the placebo studies suggest)
