Rapid Shedding/diffuse Hair Loss At 20?

Hello everyone,

I have been experiencing some increased shedding over the past 8-10 months. The hair loss is very diffuse and now noticeable, especially when it’s wet. I am 20 years old and have always had a thick/full head of hair so this was alarming to me. Also there is no trace of hair loss in my family. I first noticed the increased hair loss when I would scratch my head and there would be some hairs on my desk or computer. Since then I have become obsessive of my hair and have been checking it more frequently for thinning. I notice some hairs (10-15) on my hands after wash my hair.

I went to a dermatologist about 4 months ago and he told me to get my thyroid checked. Turns out my thyroid was significantly elevated and I was diagnosed with hashimotos disease and was prescribed medication for it. I’ve been taking the medication for 2 months now and my thyroid level is normal. Unfortunately, however, the hair fall has not stopped and my scalp is still very itchy and flaky. It almost seems like my body is attacking my hair follicles or something.

Below are pictures of my hair. I know it looks thick still but I have noticed some recession in the corners of my hairline. When I style my hair it is very noticeable to me. I also have a cowlick/whorl in the back of my head which makes it difficult to determine if there is any thinning there.

hashimotos itself doesnt really need medication its an underlying condition of thyroid that only has to be treated when it leads to hormonal disbalance, i do have it also, and i think i had same hair as you do at 20, but i didnt pay attention to hair shedding, thinking it was my itchy scalp and seborheic dermatitis, but judging by your front hair line it seems like you are balding very slowly. only way to find out is to track the dynamics and check hair follicles sizes with dermatoscopy.

Thank you for the info. My dermatologist told me that I have seborheic dermatitis as well and prescribed me with a shampoo for it. However, the shampoo didn't make a difference on the hair loss or dandruff/itchiness unfortunately.
