Hello fellow hair loss sufferers,
I spent the last months reading a lot on this forum. But I just joined and decided to share my story with you guys right now.
I noticed my temples receding when I was 18; I'm now 20. I've always had a high hairline but in the last months it has become more obvious that I was receding when my hairline started to show the famous V-shape. I then made the decision and am now fighting hair loss since 3 months and 10 days.

- 5% Kirkland Minoxidil
- saw palmetto whole berry (switched to 320mg of extract after about a month in)
- 1% Nizoral

After about 2 months I started to see regrowth or at least so I thought. There definitely there are new little hairs sprouting!! But overall I think my temples are receded more than when I started treatment. Maybe it is a SHED?

I am now pretty insecure about continuing my treatment with minoxidil but on the other hand I don't wanna stop with it since it's the most powerful part of my treatment.

What you guys suggest me to do? Drop the minoxidil or stay on it?
Also, how can I improve my regimen without adding something harsh like finasteride?

I'm gonna upload some pics as soon as possible. But at the moment I'm always getting and error.

2,5 months:

3 months:

Now compare the 3 months pic with the one before the treatment. Looks a little worse, does'nt it? But after 2,5 months you can clearly see new hairs growing.

Okay, here's a HIGH-res picture of my right temple from today (3 months, 11 days on treatment).

You can see the new hair growing and it's getting longer. Also if you really zoom in you can see a lot of tiny new hairs that are slowly getting darker.

What do you guys say? Because overall my hairline looks slightly worse than before the treatment. I should maybe mention that I'm using minoxidil only on the hairline and nowhere else (yet).

Nice progress dude 22 here with similar loss just posted my 3 month update too, only difference being that your on minoxidil and I'm using finasteride only, may have to consider adding minoxidil to my regime after seeing this :)

Thanks man. Saw your pictures. Looks like some impressive progress as well, keep it up ;)
I don't wanna get on finasteride just yet cause of the sides. But if you're good with it and don't experience any you should definetely keep using it. Who knows how good your hair will look after 12 months on finasteride. And for further regrowth it you could really consider getting on minoxidil.

Yes. It's called hair loss ;) jk. So what are you saying exactly? I obviously don't want that to happen. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks for your answers so far :) I'll keep you updated.

So my questioan is: How can I improve my regimen in order to make those vellus hairs in the temple area grow out to "real" hair? :dunno:

It's a losing battle if your not going to add finasteride. Any regrowth u get the dht will ultimately win in the long term.

That's the reason I go with Saw Palmetto and Nizoral for now. I planned on adding finasteride or dutasteride as late as possible when I begin losing the hair I gained again.

i feel neither saw palmetto or nizoral is strong enough to fight the dht

I guess only time will tell. But when I start thinking about the side effects of finasteride I just want to delay the use as long as possible. I've seen a few threads where for some people minoxidil and other stuff alone worked for years without any dht-inhibitor. And since I have no sides whatsoever from minoxidil yet I think I'm good with that for now.

But thank you very much for your answer. ;)

Has anyone experience with using minoxidil ONLY?

Since people prefer to only look at pictures of hair instead of commenting on them ( ), here are some new ones taken yesterday and today! I'm on treatment since Feruary 24th.

Watch your crown. Usually after the temples the crown starts to thin. That would be a signal to add finasteride.

Thanks for the tip, mate. I'll keep an eye on that. Depressing :|
Is this inevitably gonna happen? I mean you often see older guys with a seriously receded hairline who never lost it on the crown, right?

Everybody is different. Some people just keep reseeding at the front until later on in life where they then begin to lose their crown (the lucky ones in my opinion). But for some (like me) :thumbdown2: when they begin to reseed at the front, the crown also begins to thin out, and sooner or later it will become a bald spot.

No way of telling really, male pattern baldness is a very unpredictable thing, as I am experiencing :shakehead: Just keep an eye on your head to see what is happening. Best of luck.

No matter how and where you're losing your hair it is NEVER pretty. What's your regimen? Are you on minoxidil as well especially since you're thinning on top?

Thank you for your encouraging words because it's real easy to get down. I hate it the most when I see guys with a perfect NW1 hairline who don't care about their hair! They have no idea what a gift that really is.

Anyways I'm about 3 1/2 months in now (as mentioned) and my hairline just keeps getting worse I think. Isn't it supposed to get better by now? I know it says you should try a thing for at least a year but it sucks that it's just getting worse instead of better.

Okay, that's it. I'm freaking out. minoxidil only made my hairline so much worse. So I'm quitting minoxidil right now. Good or bad decision?

To fight it alone, I agree.
You better get several things.

I'd be happy for any suggestions. Are there other topical products that do work?

And btw.: Haven't dropped the minoxidil yet. Even though my temples seem worse and it also seems to begin "infecting" the rest of my hairline (or this is regrowth? Ha, yeah right) I refuse to think that this anti hair loss product that is officially proven to work makes me loose my hair!
Has anyone any experience with the minoxidil on the hairline and tell me that this is normal and my hair will come back stronger?

Meds often make your hair shed at first and then new strong hairs appear. I would suggest staying with minoxidil for a couple of months more. You will know if it works for you at the mark "5-6 months". After all, you have nothing to lose.
