Red Scalp!

I have been rubbing 5% minoxidil (regaine) into my poor scalp for two weeks now, morning and night.

I have noiced a kind of red lumpy rash where the minoxidil was applied, this has only appeared in the last 2 or 3 days,

I am also using Nizoral 2% (Mon/Wed/Fri)
and T-Gel (Sat/Sun/Tue/Thur)

The rash is only lightly red and slightly bumpy, it is hardly itchy or flaky.

Does this mean I am allergic to something in the minoxidil or one of the shampoos.?

Is this my scalp adjusting to the minoxidil?

Will it settle down?

I am trying to cut the T-gel out first, to see if it is the 'coal tar' as the label says it can cause rashs/acne out breaks on exposure to sun.

Anyone here tried a bit of moisturiser on their scalp between applications?

Any info greatly appreciated

I used minoxidil for 2 months, and then stopped, during that time I used t-gel and nizoral and subsequently after i STOPPED minoxidil.

I have since restarted minoxidil (4 month break - cardinal sin - dont do it, read my other post)..i had stayed with the t-gel, nizoral combo

I have too noticed that the minoxidil does make my scalp red, settled after stoppage, and back since I started.

like you said, it isnt itchy or flakey just red.

So - as I cant answer your question about reaction/allergy..I can say that the t-gel isnt what is doing it, for me at least. I do not feel that my scalp is all that red (crown area) from the minoxidil, it is noticeable when I am applying and studying that bald f'ing zone that used to be such luscious taken for granted hair.

we have chosen our path, and minoxidil is a necessary evil...I have not yet though chosen propecia as my necessary evil <-- that has nothing to do with your quesiton, but it just flowed...

Sounds very similar to what happened to me. My suggestions:

Stop using nizoral first, drop to 1 application of minoxidil a day.
Alternate between TGEL and TSAL shampoos daily.

If rash is ok, try 2 applications a day.

If rash continues you are mostly likely allergic to the Propelyene Glycol in the minoxidil. Try ordering some PG-Free minoxidil from Dr. Lee. http://www.minoxidil.com

Finally, bring in the big-dog... Folligen. This will improve your scalp condition. Made mine wonderful!

cheers for the info bombscience,

I have stopped using T-Gel for 4 days now and my scalp is definatley less 'crispy duck' so maybe it was the interaction between minoxidil and T-gel or just the T-Gel.

I have been using the new T/Gel Therapeutic Shampoo with Solubilised Coal Tar Extract.

hmmm.... If it gets bad again I will swap stuff around to locate the culprit, but I suspect it could be the T-Gel.

What is this Tsal stuff, I don't know if we can get that in the UK.

What is Folligen? Is it good?

I am considering rubbing a bit of moisturiser into my dome between applications for a few weeks untill my head adapts to being napalmed twiced a day, am I mad to do this?

I have found a moisturiser from Neutrogena which is copper based and has Copper Tripeptide-1 in anyone know if this is any good for your head??

Thanks again for the info

I got the same problem

I dropped Nizoral thinking that might be the problem. The Nizoral might be part of it, but I know for sure minoxidil is to. So I went to the store today and went looking for a Moisturizer. I bought "Aveeno Skin relief", combed back my hair and applied to to the area. The redness went away for the most part rather quik and the itchyness stopped right away.

Last Jan I was helping my stepfather repair a fence on their property. I was outside for 2 days and the freezing wind dried my face up pretty bad and made it red, inflamed, and itchy. I used the same stuff then and it helped. My irritation from the minoxidil looks/feels exactly the same as it did then.

So for the time being I am gonna drop the minoxidil to 1 time a day and in the morning I am gonna use this stuff to see if it helps. After one use, I think this will do the trick.

day 5 with NO T/Gel but still using nizoral (3xweek) and 5%minoxidil (2xday).

Scalp 95% cured!!!!!!

No redness, no itchyness, very slight flakyness (you have to look close to see it).

So I might try and re-introduce T/Gel in a week or so leaving it on for only a minute or so at first, using it say...twice a week at first ?

If not I will go for another shampoo, any suggestions ????
