I think it's better at maintanence and generally keeping the areas of hair that you do have thick, than people suspect. I quit minoxidil for about 5 months after using it for around one year. I didn't think I had much gains from using it and my hairline kept thinning, but after quitting it I feel that I've gotten thinner in areas I didn't have problems with before. Also it grew lots of vellus hairs around the hairline that also disappeared after using it.
I'm back on it now because I think that while it might not regrow the hairline it probably keeps what you do have thicker than without.
I've actually grown more hair on minoxidil, and especially a combination of minoxidil and Retin-a, than I ever did on finasteride.
I started finasteride 4.5 years ago, and just did ok. I started seeing modest results between 6-12 months. But after starting minoxidil, around the third year, the results were almost immediate. I grew TONS of hair at the hairline -- probably somewhere in between an adolescent and juvenile hairline. And the crown now totally equals my sides in total fullness. My vertex is also coming in fuller than I could have ever dreamt... Retin-a helped most here.
I know; I'm likely one of the very fortunate ones. Anyhow, it just goes to prove, when minoxidil works on some, it REALLY works. And it also demonstrates how different people react to different medications. Not everyone even balds for the same reasons. So, I would always recommend to try the big three, one at a time, and give them some time. Cause you just won't know till you experiment a little.
At this point, I've pretty much stopped finasteride for the last 4 months. I'll probably make a topical and finish out my last batch of finasteride by this summer. To be honest, except for the increase in energy and stamina, I really didn't enjoy the sexual side effects from finasteride.
