Saw Palmetto sides

I started using saw palmetto about 4 years ago for about a year. Stopped as I was unsure it was working. I was a NW1 at the time and my hairline wasn't getting any worse. I was on minoxidil 5% and the SP. I have been on minoxidil every since consistently.... but I started back up on SP about a year ago when I noticed by hairline was taking a bit of a hit and the MIN alone wasn't doing that good of a job. So between the time I was on SP the first time and when I went back on it, was about 2 years.

Fast forward until last few weeks. I started to feel panicky and anxious. I did not know what to attribute it to as there was nothing in my person or work life that had changed. If anything work has been a lot less stressful. It started to concern me when it went on for about 3-4 days straight. I noticed a pattern, however. I noticed it was worse in the late morning to afternoon, and at night it would seem to taper off. Even at night, I would still feel a bit on edge. I would take the SP at night a couple hours before I went to bed. That is when I started to research the side effects of SP and anxiety. I quickly stumbled upon Propeciahelp where a lot of people complained about experiencing side effects from SP that were also side effects from finasteride.

I know there is A LOT of debate whether SP works the same way as finasteride does. I think the biggest issue is how much of SP to take to have it produce the same results as finasteride. I truly believe it has the same effects as finasteride because of the side effects I experienced on SP. I felt the anxiety come and go during the initial go at SP, but thought it could be the MIN or stress from work as well but like I mentioned above I stopped SP as I went away and was lazy to take the pills. While I was away I was under a lot of external stressors and didn't even feel anxious at all.

The side effects I experienced are as follows;

- anxiety/panicky (it didn't happen right away, but started a day here and there, then almost daily after about 10 months of continuous use)

- ball ache (experienced it the first 2-3 weeks of starting up on

- hard stool (to the point where it caused regular a*** fissures)

- increase libido (never had morning boners regularly until I was on SP)

I didn't experience watery jizz or decreased libido.

After being convinced the SP was causing the above side effects, I stopped taking it immediately. The following morning I felt a HUGE decrease in anxiety. I have been off SP for three days now and I can say I am almost back to normal with respect to my anxiety levels. I no longer feel like my heart is pounding, on edge, stressed, and easily irritated for no apparent reason. My stools are back to normal consistency and have not caused any further bleeding in my rectum. Ultimately, I feel GOOD. Take it for what it is worth. Could it be placebo? It could be, but when I took SP, I never thought of the sides as the ones I experienced weren't listed as the "common" side effects reported.

A lot of people talked about how they never attributed their anxiety to SP or the finasteride they are taking, and why would you? Why would something for hair loss or your prostate cause anxiety etc..... I am not here to educate people about the different studies an try to convince people whether SP works and or causes side effects I experienced. All I am here to do is tell you what I experienced while taking SP, and for those out there who have been feeling anxiety/panic attacks, to consider the root cause being SP or finasteride.

Hey mate,

I'm not denying that some of your symptoms are real. I went searching for answers when I had terrible side effects from propecia numbness, impotence etc. One word of advice stay away from those forums. I'm sure you will be ok, don't be scared to go to the doctors. Do not self-diagnose. Some of the guys on there are nuts and reading all these stories don't help. Again i'm not denying any of these symptoms are real but there is a lot of fear mongering and cynical people on there that just want to vent. Distance yourself from it.

The side effects you experience could be very real. From my own experience I know that they are real but placebo could come with it aswell. I was very cautious of every feeling I felt in my body and just overanalyzed everything.
I experienced side effects before, but only from a single 0.25 mg dose of finasteride, not saw palmetto. Heavy anxiety and stress was the worst for me along with other side effects that subsided over the days, weeks and months after taking it. The most horrible ones subsided earlier. I still experience 5-10% light side effects and I expect them to go over aswell within next couple of weeks or months.

What dose of saw palmetto did you take and how often did you take it?

I took 320 of the extract once a day, at night. I was taking it for the past 10 months religiously. Like I said, I stopped taking it as of a few days ago.

Aeroes, I know you are trying to give me advice but as I mentioned, I took SP not even thinking about ANY of the side effects as I didn't think it would effect me in any way. The side effects I experienced were things that came up without me worrying about them/being a hyperchondriac. For me, I started researching AFTER experiencing the symptoms, not before. The ball ache came out of no where and I believe it is more than just coincidence that I experienced it for the first time, ever, and it was after taking SP. That subsided after the first few weeks. When it did occur I wondered why I was getting it... It wasn't until later that I remember it was a side effect of finasteride. I ignored it because it came and went and wasn't a big deal. My libido and jizz were fine so I didn't sweat it.

The anxiety/panic came on slowly until it was going on for a couple days straight. That is when I started to look into it more. It is possible that is placebo. Anything is possible. But again it seems a bit much of a coincidence when my anxiety reduced significantly the first day I stopped taking SP.

Take it for what it is worth For those who don't experience side effects, or ones severe enough to effect their daily life, I don't expect them to understand. It is human nature to disregard what others say until it happens to you. I just made this post so people who may be experiencing anxiety/panic attacks/depression to the point where their life is severely effected, may want to look at the meds they are taking, rather than blaming themselves.

At the end of the day, it is hairloss.. I have let it effect me for years, even though I am a Norwood 2 at worst right now. Look at how many men suffer from hairloss.. Probably 50% of men you see on the bus or on the street have some sort of hairloss. We are not 18 anymore. I am still taking MIN and spironolactone cream daily, but I am no longer going to stress over it so much anymore. I have a fiance and a great job. I will do my part in using the topicals, but will never do anything that would jeopardize my health and well being just to have a few more follicles... Because that is what it is, salvaging a few follicles...

For those who aren't experiencing side effects, good on you. But for me, my health and well being is way more important than a NW0.

good way of looking forward. How unfortunate that you say it wasnt working and that you experienced side effects from it. I just wanted to add that just in case you feel more anxious in my experience fish oil, magnesium and B vitamin complex was a big help.
all the best.

thanks buddy.. I personally thin SP does work, just not as well as finasteride... but more for maintenance than anything. But yea, I am 32 years old. At least I was able to enjoy my hair when I was in my 20s... At this rate, I will probably be a solid NW3 when I am 40, which I can't really complain about.
