Hi, I just switched back to dr lee's minoxidil/retin-a combo after not using it for 2 months. Is it usual for the scalp to peel like this? I'm not talking about flakes, but little pieces of dead skin here. My scalp isn't itching much, but I just noticed these little pieces scalp peeling off after minoxidil dries now.

Saran-wrap your head so you retain all your lost skin. I did that three years ago when male pattern baldness started up on me. Now, people just think I'm a damned fool, but not a damned balding one.

thanks for the response, jackass! :) no, but it's peeling pretty bad. i thought inorder to get good hair regrowth you needed a healthy scalp. i don't know if all this skin peeling off is actually THAT healthy.

Common side effect. I always wondered wether retin-a was good for hair growth considering it causes peeling, things can be good in theory, but not in practice.

Some people might suggest emu oil added to shampoo, perhaps t/sal shampoo. This might help. You could email dr. lee? Perhaps the symptoms will subside after a few weeks?

I suggest you search the archives of all the hair forums to find out more info.

You're quite welcome, c*** smoker. Thought I was pretty accurate with my statement. Retin-A causes skin to peel, it's just what it does. The skin peeling is actually REALLY healthy...it's caused by the cleansing action of retinoic acid. Out with the old, in with the new.

Right. And mine stopped peeling within a few weeks. I think it sort of reaches a point where the dead skin doesn't build up that much anymore and just sloughs in the shower.

I remember when i was 16-17, I had a bit of acne. My derm. gave me a tube of retin-a for my acne and man did it scorch my face. It burnt like a mofo and peeled my skin off. I was dusting off dead skin from my shirt and face all the time. But after the treatment i had soft, supple, fresh skin w/ no acne.

I also know they have em in pill form for some serious acne problems. My freind had sever acne esp on his back. He had to go on the pill and he shed like a snake coming out of its old skin. Poor sucker couldnt sleep on his back.

LOL

Anyway, i have been using DR Lee's minoxidil with Retin A for almost 4 months now. It is a b**ch, and my skin itches and peels, but it does its job very well. In terms of regrowing hair, of course

The theory is the retin-A causes the sloughing of scalp which allows the minoxidil to penetrate easier and more efficiently into the scalp. There has also been studies that retin-A alone causes hair growth....proven in balding monkeys.
