Shedding only in the shower

I'm new here, so I'll post a few details about my situation first. I'm 20 years old, and I first noticed my balding in the beginning of May after getting a haircut, although I'm sure I've been losing some hair longer than that. I have very uneven temple thinning; the right side must be something like a 1.5 on the Norwood scale, while the left side hasn't receded at all; just some thinning. Some see through scalp on my crown too, although you can't see it when the hair's dry. I have moderate length curly hair, which was exceptionally thick throughout my teenage years, and it sucks losing it when I'm still in college.

I've been on propecia since August, and starting tomorrow I'll have been on it for two months exactly. No significant changes so far; shedding tends to vary from day to day in quantity, and there's certainly no regrowth as of yet. I'm also using Nizoral 2% every three days. My scalp hardly itches anymore, which is great. Probably from carefully experimenting with different shampoos (tea tree, moisturizers) than from these medications, though.

Anyway, I haven't found a post quite like this on the forums, so I have to relate my situation. I tend to lose around 60-90 hairs every time in the shower, equivalent to the amount a person loses in a day. Surely I lose more elsewhere. But, when I comb my hair, I don't lose any hair, unless I give several brush strokes, and then I may only get 7-8 at the most. If I do this too, I pull at my hair (because of the curls), and I'm probably the one guilty of pulling out my hairs. I never find hairs on my pillow.

I can't help but feel that I am causing my own baldness by a)tugging at the hair when I comb it, and b) rubbing my head too vigorously when I shampoo. This morning, I decided to be extra gentle when applying nizoral, and I only found about 15 hairs total. Of course I may have just lost most of them down the drain when I rinsed, but I wouldn't be the wiser. So, can physical stress cause baldness, and can I prevent with more cautious grooming?

To have an accurate count of the hair you loose while you shower is to put something (towel) on the drain to prevent the hair to escape with the flow of water... is this the case with you.

Since you can count up to 90 hair.... i assume that you have plugged the drain.

You're just shedding. I have experienced that situation as well, wet the hair, and holly sh*t, the hair doesn't seem to stop falling. Actually, even people who do not suffer from male pattern baldness lose a ton of hair in the shower. Its normal, and its even more normal if you are on treatments.

Yeah, my sister has a really thick head of hair but when I look in the bathtub after it looks like there's enough for donor hair lol. So I think people should chill out a little if they see a lot of hair in the shower.

I notice I lose hairs mainly when I'm showering too.

It may be because the moisture of my hands makes the hair stick to the palm, which lets me look at the hair, or it may be that the hair comes out more readily when it is wet.

Either way, male pattern baldness sucks.
