Should I Fear Minoxidil

At 48 years old I have begun to see thinning at my hairline and top of head. I have been using Lab Series Root Shampoo and Root Treatment. I also use Shieshiedo Andenosine at night. I found some Minoxidil my brother left at my house. It is a 5% solution and the expiration date was 10/04. Is this worth using or will the ingredients be too weak. I thought maybe it would be like a 2% solution so long after expiring. If i can use it, is it ok to use with my other treatments? Also, I take blood pressure medicine. Is it safe to use Minoxidil, I read it is also a blood pressure medicine. Thanks for any help you can give.

Nice answer Chem. Apologize, or I will give you a spanking!

cigator, I'm 45 and not quite dead yet  . I've been taking Diovan for years for high blood pressure. While Minoxidil was originally for HBP, I've had two doctors not bat an eye when I told them I was using it. Ask your doctor what he thinks. I don't know how minoxidil would work with the other products you are using.

I'd say ditch the old Minoxidil. Minoxidil shouldn't be that expensive, no matter where you are from. What country do you live in?

I've had good luck with the Big 3 - Propecia, Minoxidil, and Nizoral shampoo.

Cruise the site for a while. This is a great site for information. You won't find a lot of posters over 30 here though.

Good luck and welcome!

Apology accepted :)

No one wants to lose their hair, no matter how old they are. We've had more time to become attached to our hair and are still surprised to see it go.

if you have high blood pressure or heart problem, I think its wise to ignore minoxidil.

Never thought that this board would react unkindly to the fact that my hair is thinning at age 48. Regardless, I have determined that I will stay away from minoxidil at least until I can discuss with my doctor. Thanks.

the younger fellas do get frustrated to start losing hair at their early 20's. Most of them will be very happy even if they can just hold on to their hair til their late 30's.

I won't be bothered with my hair if I am in my late 40's personally. I am not saying it to offense you, I just think at 48, I will be focused on career and family that I wont have the time and heart to care about my hair.

I'll always care about my hair, unless I learn that women don't care about it. Yet that is what many women say when they reject me: you look so old!

The expiration dates are usually very conservative. The expiration dates on my bottles are usually at least 6 months after I buy them. I doubt the FDA would allow for more than a 10% break down before the expiration date. Using that math, a 2 year old bottle of Minoxidil would be at least 60% of it's original strength, although I suspect it is actually higher.

Sometimes at 24 years old I wish my hair would fall out faster. I'm starting to miss balding :,(
