Should I Stop Minoxidil After 5months

Hi,

I've been using 5% Kirkland minoxidil on my hairline since September, and have generally used regular dosages (I have only missed around 10days in 5months, and have switched from once a day to twice a day - I'm now using it once a day).

After what might have been a shed where my right temple thinned out in December, it has only got thinner since then and I do not see any signs of regrowth from this.

Should I then quit Minoxidil? I've seen people recommend quitting after 4months as it says on the packaging, however I have seen others saying you should wait for 6months up to a year to see effect.

Thanks

if you use it once a day its recommended to use double the normal amt.
if you havent done that, id recommend using it for a few more months, using more, and also not missing any days. hair sheds and grows in cycles and who knows, maybe by missing so many applications youre messing up the cycles

I'll try this, thank you

Hey, I followed the advice to use twice a day - and have been doing so since late February, yet my temples have continued to get worse. This could be the minoxidil or just male pattern baldness progression. Since I have had no cosmetic improvement after starting minoxidil in Sept, is it even worth continuing?

I'm planning to add a dht inhibitor but am a bit wary of finasteride since a bad experience with accutane which is said to have similar effects on some fronts.

Seriously considering giving up on minoxidil, it has done nothing except maybe accelerate my loss over these past 8 months or so

Hmm that's a shame, I'd say definitely add in finasteride but keep with the minoxidil too. My experience the first go around with treatments (I quit for years and now am back on) was that on finasteride for a year my hair got worse, but after adding in rogaine, that's when things started to get better, year 2 it was much better and year 4 it was the best it looked, but that's when I quit as I just stopped caring pretty much. So I'd say you need to use both and you'll be much likelier to respond well!

It works differently for different people. Minoxidil stopped my hair loss within weeks, but I think that's all it really does for me and some thickening. Others see regrowth. It was pretty obvious hair shedding, I was on nothing, I was balding fast. Kirkland's minoxidil surprisingly slowed the hair loss down in the first week, and within about 3 weeks of regular twice a day 2ML use I noticed no more shedding. Btw this was without finasteride, I added finasteride a month later. I never experience the "shed" that other people talk about getting months into minoxidil. Your issue could be that 1. You don't respond to minoxidil. 2. you are responding to minoxidil but you have no reference point (pics) to see it so you think it's not working (happened to me at 18). 3. Maybe you need to get on finasteride first to see if it stabilizes your hair and then use minoxidil. I did the opposite because of money/college at the time, but I don't regret going with minoxidil first because it did help anyway. But I would get on finasteride first, or even dutasteride, and if minoxidil 5% doesn't work, try 10-15%. Trial and error, rinse and repeat, don't give up.
