Im very scared of finasteride and i read alot studies and storys on this forum. I knew that sides can be real and that they can be higher than in this 1996 Merck Fake studs. But Like many people say: i dont want to regret it to not even gave It at least a try. Have you good words For me before i start.
PS: i checked my Hormones before
Dht: 960 ref: 250-1000
T: 5,1 ref: 2,5-8,4
Free T: 11 ref: 8-41
Estradiol : 25 ref: 11-43
Prolactin: 16 ref: 4-15
I know no units, im not at Home the ref.Range should give enough information.
I know my free T is low but i feel very manly and i Look manly, im relativ strong and can get Aggro fast. I guess the androgenetic effects are more controlled by the DHT in my body. Im 25 years old. Sry for my bad smartphone englisch. I hope it will work for me and ofc for you too.

No sides!

I’m taking Finasteride for five and a half years. First four years were great, during the last year and a half I’ve lost some ground but I experienced major stress and I’ve been quite ill lately...

Had prostate pain the first month or 3, then nothing else ( probably because it was shrinking).
Severe anxiety, depression etc from the hair loss, not finasteride (maybe from finasteride too, but hair loss is f*****g depressing on its own).
another thing i have noticed is joint pain perhaps, my knee's has started to hurt a lot when i have remained seated for a while then stood up, another joint area pain is elbow but that was when i did skull crushers (weightlifting) and i have had that pain before i started finasteride, its a known workout to give you elbow pain, so its probably not finasteride and my shoulders have always popped, but its just this knee's hurting like a b**ch that has recently started which i'm not sure what to make out of the cause, i'm not one to blame everything on finasteride but i don't rule out possibilities.

That's all the "sides" i got, 6 months in.
i remember i was scared starting it too and very careful, now i just take it normally with 1.25mg dose.
Start small, then up the dose, better safe than sorry, but i don't think 1 pill will f*** you up for life, but who knows, maybe after some years of taking it, or never, my dermatologist said its like: you can go out skiing, and there is always a risk you might fall.

You can search all you want, there won't be a answer you are looking for (a clear yes or no).
its all up to you.

EDIT: i do wish i had started it much earlier than i did, i catched it late, and it f*****g sucks, hope i can recover somehow decently.

.

+1 on knee pain and popping joints after increasing finasteride. In fact long term sex hormone disruption is an important factor in articular cartilage knee OA. Knee chondrocytes are one of the few cells in our body that convert T to DHT.

Also, if you wanna try finasteride you most definitely should. Try it, if you get sides that doesn't disappear after a week and are not tolerable then quit. You will not get sides from using finasteride for a week that will never subside and make you spiral into oblivion, that's just bullshit.

I had sides for about the first month or so, but they were actually “good” side effects. Sex drive went through the roof and then settled back down after a few weeks

I voted for "No sides" but option called "Yes full blown pfs" made me laugh

4 months in: started with .25 mg EOD and have slowly worked up to 1.25 mg/day. I had brain fog ~ 1 week at the beginning and believed I would have to quit...It suddenly went away. I'm a little nervous about being at my current dose of 1.25mg but I am prepared to drop down to 1 mg if things get bad-cognitively or sexually speaking.

Stop seeking reassurance, this is not doing you any good. Literally nobody on this forum can tell you if you will experience side effects.

The simple fact is that the probability that a person consciously experiences serious side effects is low. If you do, stop the medication unless you prefer hair above all. There is a reason healthcare providers (at least in my country) are increasingly reluctant in distributing this medicine; PFS is real and there exist no long term finasteride studies.

I would strongly advise you to stop browsing for horror stories here, it will do you more harm (think nocebo) than good. Good luck.

I've been taking finasteride for years (probably more than 5). No erectile dysfunction. Never really noted any significant side effects that I recognized as related to finasteride until now.

I can honestly say that I have had increased depression the past few years, but cannot contribute that to finasteride as there are so many factors and I just got sober 2 years ago and I'm a 53yo single man with no girlfriend and major life challenges. Thus, attributing depression to the finasteride would seem really a reach. Unlikely to be having a big effect...perhaps could be adding a bit to it.

Nevertheless, I have increased finasteride to 2x/day (I figured with the 8 hour half-life, it would be beneficial), taking about 0.75-1mg twice a day, on average, over the past year or more.

Since then, I have had strange joint pains, which seem to be significantly worse over the past year or so, and had thought about them and wondered, so hearing that finasteride may cause joint pains and arthritis, it could be attributable. But when I look up side-effects in my drug database (I'm a physician), it doesn't even list arthritis....so usually this means it's either an extremely rare side-effect, or one which has not been objectively observed in trials. Trials don't necessarily cover everything, but this side-effect list would include Proscar at 5mg/day doses, so you'd think it'd be listed.

I have definitely noted decreased volume of ejaculate and probably decreased libido (not dramatic but a bit).

Hope this is helpful.

I haven't made the move to dutasteride because the Canadian Pharmacy won't let us prescribe our own and when I had a friend prescribe it, I had him write the script for 5x/day, just to stockpile out of convenience. They wouldn't fill it and I haven't gotten around to messing with getting it, but likely will. Still need to read on here and determine if it's significantly better. Anyone who knows, please PM me. Thanks.

I went on Finasteride and tried it for 29 days and then I had to stop taking it.
It's unfortunate too because I really wanted to add it to my regimen of Minoxidil, Laser cap, DHT reducing shampoo & derma-rolling.

After about 7 days of taking my daily 1mg pill I developed a 2/4 7 headache. Not like a migraine type headache but it was definitely a non stop headache that wouldn't go away. Never the less, I kept on taking the daily pill hoping it would subside..

About 15 days into it, I noticed my erections were getting very soft. 25 days into it I found it very difficult to get an erection. This issue was constantly on my mind because I never in my life ever had any problems with erectile dysfunction. On day #29 I stopped taking the drug altogether because I could not get an erection at all. I kept thinking, "is this drug is trying to change my penis into a vagina". This cannot happen!

I'm now 5 days without taking a pill and nothing has reverted back to normal yet. I'm sure it'll take a while but I'm hoping to God to get back to my old normal self.

I'm very disappointed that I had such a horrific side affect to the 1mg pill. I really, really wanted it to help me out with my receding hairline and I know I gave it an honest trial. Obviously the Finasteride doesn't affect everybody like this but it certainly affected me.

Just curious since you are a physician, what is the role of DHT for an adult (I'm close to your age). I am familiar with the role of DHT during puberty/early childhood, I just didn't know the role it plays in mature adults and if the reduced levels by finasteride has any negative effects (beyond the reported mild sexual ones). Thanks!
