So Was Shedding A Good Thing For You?

I think one of the most biggest emotional rollercoasters is the shedding part because you are putting faith into the idea its temporary but there is always this doubt in your mind that eats at you.

there are so many stories of multiple sheds and sheds but no regrowth that i really would like to know in the long run was the shed worth going through to reach results or was the shedding outweighing the results?

I had an initial massive shed that lasted for 1 and a half months, after that I was astonished with the regrowth. Now, from 8-9th month I'm going through another big shed (shedding small hairs) but I'm definitely waaaay better than baseline.

Yeap, lot of it. I lost tons of hairs from everywhere. I had a second moderate shed also accompanied with itchiness but I bounced back. Now, I'm in the same situation, still waiting to see how it plays

I am on minoxodil and topical spironolactone/estrodail since November--now 9 months.
I had good results.
Before starting in November I had massive shedding of long and short hairs daily for a long time.
I would touch my hair ad it would just fall out...
Medications quickly slowed down my shedding and my short hairs were more 'rooted' in my scalp...I had/have pretty decent regrowth.
I am a good responder.

Now past two weeks I am in month 9 I am having a massive shed of short hairs 1 inch to 2 inch long.
A few long strands but not abnormal..the short hairs are freaking me out.

I do see some loss on scalp it seems (hard to tell if paranoia)

So is this normal process?

Same situation, check my thread. From what I found on the web people who had a quick and massive initial shed accompanied with great regrowth, really experience a second shed and it occurs between 7th-9th month. I finally was able to find a couple of guys on reddit who posted that they bounced back really good. From your experience do you have seasonal sheds in the summers?

Sorry if this is long and too detailed..
It is hard to say I hemorrhaged small hairs last spring until fall when I started to use medicated Keto 2% BUT i was shedding heavily for years before this and took it for granted because my hair is long curly and 'was' very dense.
I had thought it was 'normal' for me UNTIL I started to get short hairs sticking up a few years ago that were not rooted well--if I tugged them gently they came out easily...
ALL those hairs started to shed last Spring/Summer with Keto 2%.
Once I got my iron up (I am anemic which made Androgenetic Alopecia worse) and started topicals spironolactone and minoxidil the shedding decreased dramatically (other than the normal dread shed which was like 2 weeks) I had also switched to keto 1% at the time just in case the 2% was making it worse.
Other than occasional short hairs shedding (like 1 or 2 in shower etc) my short hairs were mostly staying in scalp and long hair shed was greatly reduced.

Now it is JUST short hairs which is freaking me out because when I had the initial 'dread shed for 2 weeks it was ALL hair long and short.

This is mostly miniaturized hairs..so I am scared/tense.

First of all, I don't understand why people use Keto so much, unless you have some kind of dermatitis or extreme itch I doubt its effectiveness. I also believe that excessive use can lead to hairloss. You can't compare the initial shed with the second shed. In the second shed there is a great number of vellus hair that the medication regrew and 1) if they're going to come back stronger they go through that phase or 2)the gonna shed anyway because they all share small life cycle. Furthermore, people don't understand the mechanism behind the initial shed. I have a theory that it is some kind of T.E and "sick" hair shed combination which everybody goes through due to hormonal deregulation and that's why we lose every kind of hair from everywhere. Stay strong, we're pretty much in the same boat and if everything plays out right lets inform the thousands of people who are going through the same...

Thank you so much you make me feel better..
I just started topical finasteride like 2 days ago (adding to topical spironolactone and a weak estrodial been using since Fall)
I am going to give it 3 months to see how it goes.

You shouldn't do that because you're in a shed situation from your primary medication. If things do work out well you can't be sure what was working for you, adding topical finasteride or the shedding from spironolactone just stopped by itself? When you're into antiandrogens give them at least a full year. Anyway, stick with them! Best of luck to us both!!!

Thats a good point but I had decided to add the finasteride before the shed started because I had good results with the topical but I felt like I needed an extra kick to really add in...so I had done some research about topical finasteride and spoke to Dr he said it was okay to add it and he felt it might really help..could be BS its hard to know if these topicals are even working vs the monoxodil alone.

I wanted to get DHT in scalp measured but don't know how to do this...Just read about it sometimes in studies..'scalp' DHT levels.

I was going to try PRP and derma rolling--these things I am definitely not going to start in light of the conversation about second sheds.

I was shedding heavily before Minoxidil and the first 2 months I was still shedding heavily, it hasn't increased because it couldn't have gotten any worse but I noticed I was shedding lots of miniature hairs as opposed to my normal shed it didn't have as many short thin hairs, starting the third month I had regrowth with noticeable cosmetic effect, but after finishing month 4 and since month 5 started I am having a bad shed, around 100 hairs per day and lots of them are long hairs that are miniaturizing but are still thick and can grow till 20 cms or something ( I know they are miniaturizing as their ends are thin and not blunt which means they weren't cut before, my usual healthy hairs can grow to 60-70 cms), and now it's almost a month since this shed started and I'm still waiting for it to subside, I'm trying not to panic as it's not dreadful and my hair looks cosmetically ok. I also started dutasteride which I believe will cause a shed in a few months if it starts "working"
