I started using the rogaine foam and nizoral about a month and a half ago for my front hairline, temples, and through towards the back. Right now if I look in the mirror closely there are many, many, many small light hairs that go from where my hairline is now to the upper part of my forehead. I just started to notice them in the last week or two.

My question is essentially, would there be any hairs where you had lost your hair through male pattern baldness? I know the hairs in the center of my hairline are new because I have always looked at that closely, but the ones at the temples and such I am not 100% sure.

If they are from the rogaine then it would almost seem i'm headed back to an average head of hair, which would be great since the last 3 years of finasteride hasn't done anything.

Only time can tell you what is gonna happen. Hair recovery is a long process. You will have to be consistent and very patient about it. GL man!!!

How about my question though?

In the area where your hairline has been lost, would there be any hairs there if not for regrowth?

yes there would. next time you see a proper bald guy, if you catch his shiny dome at the right angle, you'll see it's covered in vellus hair. that's if he doesn't shave it regularly, of course.

it doesn't mean that you're not getting regrowth, however.
