Some questions regarding Propecia/finasteride

I am seriously considering starting finasteride (I'm 32) and I have some questions that I hope can be answered:

- I know finasteride stops working after a few years and if you stop taking it you will lose what you have gained. But what would happen if you were off finasteride for a few weeks/months/etc. and then started it all over again? Would it be possible to hold on to what hair you have at that time for another few years?

- finasteride supposedly reduces body hair (which I would consider a good side effect). However, when finasteride loses it's effects and you are forced to stop taking it, will the body hair grow back to what it was before or will it grow back thicker than what it was before?

I'm not on finasteride yet but I plan to be very soon. I would just like to know as much details as I can before jumping on the stuff....

What are you talking about? What do you mean 'what you stated is not true'? I'm not stating anything, I'm asking questions.

My buddy has been on finasteride for almost 6 yrs now and his hair has maintained very well. He's a pretty hairy fella and according to him, finasteride does not have any impact on his body hair.

I have been on finasteride for 5 months now, I do not notice any chance in body hair at all.

I have been on finasteride for 5 months now, I do not notice any chance in body hair at all.

I got this information from reading posts on these boards and also from reading the 5-year Propecia study on this site. I'm glad to hear finasteride has worked for over 5 years for your friend. That sounds very promissing. Well, I guess I'm finally going to give finasteride a shot. I will keep you guys posted as soon as I start.....

Looks like you misinterpreted the Propecia 5yr study. The average hair count in the treatment group does peak at yr 2 and then slowly falls towards baseline, but this is more than likely due to the fact that non-responders drag down the average once responders have plateaued. In other words, the decline in hair counts in the study does not necessarily reflect a decline in Propecia's efficacy.

I only regret not taking it a year earlier.

I was in denial for a year, I was hoping it could be kidney problem, throid problem or a Telogen Effluvium. If only I could accept the fact that it was male pattern baldness, I would have maintained a lot more hair with finasteride. finasteride does work but it takes time, do not expect a big change in the first month.

And as I've posted ad nauseum, the 5-year Propecia trial shows that the average difference in haircounts between finasteride users and placebo users continues to INCREASE as time goes by, it doesn't DECREASE. So people need to stop suggesting that finasteride "stops working" after a while. It sure as hell DOESN'T stop working, although it may not superficially appear to be working quite as well as it once did, for reasons that have yet to be clearly elucidated. But if you stop using the drug just because it seems to be working somewhat less well than it used to, you're gonna get a very nasty surprise when you see how your hair gets even a lot worse than it was! :wink:

What you just said doesn't make a bit of sense. If finasteride reduced my body hair then it's quite obvious that this can happen to some people, whether is was listed as a side effect or not....DHT has the opposite effect on body hair so it can be concluded that a reduction in DHT can cause a reduction in body hair. Like I said, there are many reports of reduced body hair from finasteride from posters on this forum.

It's not listed as a side-effect probably because the effect is relatively subtle.

DHT causes baldness and secondary sexual characteristics like facial hair and body hair.

If you reduce dht you can in theory reduce body hair.

finsteride blocks 50 percent of the type 1 of 5ar (i think type 1 but forget exactly it might be type two)which testosterone needs to be converted into DHT. Dusteride blocks both types so thats why its more effective at stoping the balding process

Jayman has been taking dusteride and said it has significantly reduced his body hair. Its the same principle but just a stonger example since its dusteride and blocking more dht.

If you stop reduce dht then you reduce its effect on the body. Logically this includes body hair. However, i havnt heard of people having less facial hair. Facial hair is usuually some of hte first hair you get so this may require lower amounts of dht to be present. I would do more research for the exact answer on that aspect.

I sware it already helped some of my back/shoulder acne (which can also be caused by dht)

Dutasteride inhibits 98.5% of 5ar2, and 50% of 5ar1. Finasteride (5mg) inhibits 90% of 5ar2. 5ar1 is found in the skin and liver, 5ar2 in the prostate, liver and hair follicles.
