Starting Back On finasteride - 0.5mg, Have Some Questions

A couple of questions.

First, can anyone speak to success with 0.5MG of finasteride daily? If possible, can you explain the differences you've experienced from taking 0.5mg daily versus taking 1mg daily? This may not apply to most but if anyone has gone through both experiences, I'd love to understand some of the different impacts.

Second, I have experience with finasteride in the past and it had an effect on my libido so I stopped, despite it having a great impact on my hair – are there medications that you can take that have a positive influence on your day-to-day testosterone without offsetting the impact of finasteride?

A lot of the side effects will come and go after a while, did you try to keep going while experiencing sides? I think 0.5mg is absolutely better than nothing....

Didn't they test fina with all kinds of doses, from like 0.1 to 5mg a day? 1mg was relatively the smartest choice if you look at the ratio effect/possible sides. But that's not to say 0.5 doesn't work. Not at all

Thanks for the reply. My concern is that, in order to have good results, does it mean you HAVE to have side effects assuming you're susceptible to them. I know I am cause I took finasteride for 3 or 4 years with good results, but also had side effects. Therefore, does it mean that if I take 0.5mg, and the side effects are either non existent or minor, does that also mean I won't experience positive results. Not sure if anyone has experience that contradicts that assumption???

No maybe your body can handle that dose well and respond to it properly, it's just that 1mg is a bit too much for you to handle.

I have had success on 0.25mg so im sure 0.5mg is good reference the dose response curve both are nearly as effective as taking 1mg

Merck did look into lower doses back in the 90s. .25mg was around 80% as effective as 1mg. So .5mg/day will most likely be around 90-95% as effective. Finasteride is a suicide inhibitor meaning 5AR takes a while to 'repopulate' after being inhibited so long term the dose does not matter as long as it is not too low to have an effect. HOWEVER, certain dosages may not be as effective at targeting certain tissues which is why the prostate requires 5mg. For hair, it does not seem to be as dose dependent for most people. I say most people as everyone is different and 1mg may not work for them but 2mg may. Same with .25mg may be great for some people and 1mg way too much. We unfortunately do not do much in terms of personalizing medications.

I think month 2 I started to notice a difference im approaching month 4 and it still seems to be getting better, theoretically it shouldn't make much of a difference whether you are on 0.25 0.5 or 1mg

There is a difference between .25mg vs. 1mg. It is a question of if there is an appreciable difference for most people when compared to the increase in side effects. 1mg is a more effective dose than .25mg.

Its pretty marginal if you reference the dose response curve chart

Go check my success thread and you tell me how I got on.... No real major sides to report either. I feared the sides that's why I started with a small dose of 0.25mg I seem to be getting on good with it

would it make sense that someone can take propecia .25 every fourth day and still get decent results because that's how long the studies have shown it takes your dht levels to rebound?
