Story of a 17 year old

Hey, I'm 17 years old and began losing my hair when I turned 17. For about three-four months, I was constantly shedding, losing 10-15 hairs when shampooing and I would have 20-30+ hairs on my pillow every morning. About three months ago, I noticed my shedding had greatly slowed down to the point that I only have 3-4 hairs on my pillow and maybe 2 hairs on my palms when shampooing.

In the four months I shed however, I have lost density in the top of my head. It's not noticable when I have longer hair (2 inches). However, after showering, I cannot even look at myself in the mirror because when wet, i can see my scalp and it's very depressing.

Since my hair started falling, I feel some sort of sensation in my scalp and it is very annoying. I have pimples there as well now.

Even tho my major shedding has stopped, I can still tug on my frontal hair and pull 1 out at times. However, if I do this in the back of my head, I get no hairs most of the time. I also lose hairs when applying minoxidil to my scalp.

5 Weeks ago, I started minoxidil 5%. Since they do not sell it in Canada, the pharmacy made it for me. Using the liquid for five weeks, 2 times daily, I decided to start using Rogaine Foam which I received yesterday.

My hair loss has not been recession as my hairline is the same. I've just lost density on the top and front of my head.

3 questions..

1) Will another major shed occur like it did earlier and further decrease my density?

2) Ever since i've been on minoxidil for 5 weeks, I have not had this crazy shed everyone talks about. I however have noticed maybe a few hairs shedding, nothing major, but it still depresses me at times. Should i still be expecting a minoxidil shed?

3) Since I have recently lost these hairs, is it possible that minoxidil will bring these follicles back to life?

Thank you

Hello Behmesh,

sorry to hear about your hair loss.

About your questions: It is hard to say how you will react to minoxidil. When it comes to treatments everybody reacts in a different manner. Neither me nor anybody else can give you an exact answer about how you will react. You simply have to wait.

But I have a question for you. Are you sure you are actually suffering from male pattern baldness? Hae you been to a doctor? From what you are writting I am not sure whether you are suffering from male pattern baldness. Maybe you are losing your hair because of thyroid problems or stress. In this case minoxidil wouldn´t be helpful. My advice to you hence is to go and see a dermatologist! Good Luck with your hair loss!

Hi thanks for the reply.

Yes I went to a derm just before I started minoxidil and he said i'm losing my hair. I've also done blood tests and nonthing was wrong. There is a long history of baldness in my family.

I'm on minoxidil now and do not want to start Propecia because I'm too young and do not want to risk it.

Ok, just wanted to make sure it is actually male pattern baldness.

I have also become hesitant to advice teenagers Propecia simply because I don´t know what it actually does (apart from stopping baldness!).

It may be a good strategy to take minoxidil only for some time and add Propecia later when you start losing ground. I personally do the other way, Propecia first and later minoxidil.

For now you might add some other stuff such as topical spironolactone or copper peptides.Though I have no experiences with these products and can´t give further advice apart from doing some reading.

Yes I'm very hesistant on even starting Propecia. The side effects are horrifying and since i'm only 17, I have not fully developed and it might ruin my growth and further development.

And I do not think anyone knows what the long term effects of it are, say what happens in like 30 years if anything.

I'm probably gonna stick only to minoxidil for a while and see what happens. I must say tho, when it started, I was horrified.

Thanks for your help Taugenichts

You need an anti-androgen.

spironolactone, green tea extract, something. Don't not do anything while waiting to be old enough for finasteride.

What is spironolactone and where can I get it? Using minoxidil alone isnt good enough?

And could anyone still answer my questions?

1) Will another major shed occur like it did earlier and further decrease my density?

2) Ever since i've been on minoxidil for 5 weeks, I have not had this crazy shed everyone talks about. I however have noticed maybe a few hairs shedding, nothing major, but it still depresses me at times. Should i still be expecting a minoxidil shed?

3) Since I have recently lost these hairs, is it possible that minoxidil will bring these follicles back to life?

Thank you

Hopefully I can answer your 3 questions with my experience with rogaine extra strength:
When I started minoxidil in july, I started applying it to my crown and front. My hairline was almost pretty much gone in a month. I shed for 4 weeks and looked pretty bad after that. Now I am seeing regrowth all over the area were I lost the hair. Good thing I stuck with the treatment. Keep in mind though, that I'm also doing propecia and like the guys said, everyone responds differently.

I would add spironolactone and a copper peptide (folligen or tricomin) besides the minoxidil. Then get on finasteride. Good luck

What are copper peptides exactly? (pills, cream?) and is spironolactone proven to work and does it inhibit DHT?

Thank you.

That's not a lot of hair but I guess everyone is different, it also depends on your current hair density. You already have good advice so.. Good luck.
