Story of effects on finasteride, good and bad, advice on starting minoxidil

Hi guys,

I'm 22 years old and I first noticed my hairline receding over a year ago(early 2013). Looking back at old pictures my hairline was perfect two years ago(early 2012). But within a year a 2x2x2 inch slick bald triangle was cut into both of my temples. I agonized over this for a year about getting finasteride because I heard about the potentially permanent side effects. I tried saw palmetto, which didn't work.

Finally I made up my mind and decided not to let my hair go without at least trying finasteride. I got generic 5mg finasteride scripts from a Doctor who told me to but it up into quarters and take them everyday(1.25mg/day). I started taking it on February 1st this year.

Effects: I can't say I experienced a shed because of finasteride, because before finasteride I was already shedding 100+ hairs every single day. finasteride didn't change the hair fall.
The first two days I took finasteride my scalp grew numb and tingly and I couldn't pee. Like, I had tiny dribble of pee even though the whole time I felt like my bladder was gonna burst. My skin got really oily, and I felt super horny, my dick was constantly up and I couldn't stop thinking about sex, like a 14 year old. I got a bit scared, so I didn't take it for 2 days, and everything went back to normal. I started taking finasteride again, except this time I took 1.25 mg every 2 days.
A week after that, I noticed a left nut hurt abit and swelled up with blood whenever I stood up. I had a varicocele. I went to the Doctor and told him everything and he told me to chill and not stand up much and wear tight underwear all the time, and go back to him in 2 weeks if it hadn't subsided. It did subside, so I didn't go back. However, my nut still hurts abit now if I spend a couple of days doing strenuous work standing up all the time. Otherwise its alright.
So I've kept at it for more than 3 months now, and yesterday when I lifted up my fringe I noticed a dense covering of short black thin hairs lining up my original teenage hairline, where it had been slick bald before(they're probably half as long and half the diameter/dark as eyebrows). The bad news was that the REAL hairline, with big long thick hairs had gone back half an inch. So I can't make up my mind if that's a good thing. (For those who might wonder how I know where my original hairline is, I happen to have quite a few moles on my face, and couple that lie exactly where my original hairline was.)

So right now, for the hair effects, that's that. Side effects, apart from the initial stuff I described above, I've had a slight decrease in libido - I ejaculate everyday, and if find I can't ejaculate one day, I'll delay the next 1.25mg by a day. I've also noticed that my ejaculate volume has halved, although it's not a terribly bad thing - I used to ejaculate at least as much as/even more than most pornstars. My penis has gotten an inch longer from 5 to 6 inches.

My hypothesis is that when I first took finasteride, it somehow swelled up my prostate and squeezed on my bladder and some surrounding blood vessels - hence the urine problems and the varicocele. After awhile, the prostate shrank beyond its original size and is now producing less semen than before. As for the slightly longer penis, I think that the reduced prostate size decreased the 'bend' in the internal part of the penis, allowing more of it to be straightened out, and more of it appears outside the body.

I've a question for you guys though - should I keep taking finasteride and hope that the mini-hairs grow into real hairs? Or should I start minoxidil? The Doctor told me not to waste money on minoxidil, but I really want those little hairs to thicken up so I have can my teenage hairline again.

PS: I'd started Nizoral shampoo before Finasteride, it didn't seem to do anything, but i've stuck with it anyway.

Hello. It sounds like you thoroughly examine yourself for symptoms, which I'm sure you didn't before starting finasteride. Try to stop thinking about it (it's hard, I know), for as long as you can. Then think back and you might realize that a lot of it, possibly all of it was in your mind. Coming from a serious hypochondriac :)

As for minoxidil, I would start! The symbiotic effect does not potentially only regrow more hair but also maintains for a longer time. However, if you don't think you can be consistent, wait until you get more desperate. You mentioned that you see results with finasteride, you could also be patient and see if it stalls, and then add it.

Good luck!

some of that stuff doesn't make sense. finasteride is designed to SHRINK your prostate. Some people have terrific results from minoxidil but that certainly isn't most people but it will help
