Styling hair after Rogaine?

My hair has started diffuse thinning, and I'm going to start on a Rogaine regimen for a few weeks and possibly get on Finasteride. Having said that, I had a question about Rogaine...

My hair is, well, a bit complicated. It's long in parts, spiky in others... for those unfamiliar I guess you could say it's "band guy" hair. Point being is that to style it I have to blow dry it, flat iron the long parts, use a paste for texture and finish the whole thing off with hairspray (told you its complicated!). My hair is oily, and is useless and completely flat unless it's freshly washed and dry, but I keep hearing that Rogaine is oily! This sucks! I don't want to have to completely change my hair just to treat it with Rogaine.

So, what have your experiences been? Do you guys wash, dry, apply, dry, then style? Just trying to get a feel for what I'm in for.

Thanks!

PS - I know I'm being a pansy about my hair, but isn't that why we're all here? :)

Hi mate

No need to worry about being a pansy about your hair. We probably all are to a certain degree, if not we would accept our shortcomings and buzz it down.

Anyhow, in answer to your question, yes minoxidil liquid can be very greasy especially Kirkland minoxidil. I used to use that just at night to be honest and wash my hair in the morning. However, I now use the rogaine foam and that is not greasy at all, in fact for me it makes my hair easier to style as it more like using a mousse than ahair loss product.

I also use irons occasionally, that is when my hair is long enough to use them but as I mentioned in another post, my last hair cut turned out shorter than I had asked for so its another few months growth required. :(

Good luck with the treatment bro

I use the minoxidil after the morning shower. I blow dry my hair then add the minoxidil and comb into place. The downsides are the greasy look and it may appear to make your hair look thinner because it gives it that wet/greasy look.

I've been struggling with this so I found a trick to make my hair appear as thick as it looks without the minoxidil.

First I tried the light brown toppik for my light brown hair, but I noticed it would drop down a bit and land on my scalp looking like dirt on my scalp. I then ordered the blond toppick which does not show up on my scalp. It thickens the appearance of my hair and does the trick. Just don't overdue it.

I ordered the cheap 'tester size' toppiks first to make sure it was the way to go.

If you use the Rogaine foam you won't suffer any greasy effects!
I think it makes my hair seem thicker too!

+1 for the Rogaine foam. Not sure if it is less, as, or more effective than the liquid but it is certainly cosmetically better and I agree it seems to coat the hair and/or very slightly thicken it.

Rogain Foam owns in the mornings. Quick and easy and you can style your hair too...this is what the Rogain site says:

7. Can I still use my regular styling aids, like hairspray or gel, when using ROGAINE®?
You may follow your normal hair care routine when using ROGAINE®. However, you should apply ROGAINE® first and wait for it to dry before applying your styling products.

10. Can I apply ROGAINE® to wet hair?
The people in our clinical studies were advised to completely dry their hair and scalp before applying ROGAINE®. However, that's not always possible. We suggest that you at least towel-dry your hair before applying ROGAINE®, so that your hair is no longer dripping.

11. Can I blow-dry my hair after applying ROGAINE® Extra Strength Solution?
Yes. It’s fine to blow-dry your hair; however, we recommend using your dryer at a lower setting.

12. Can I get my hair wet after applying ROGAINE®?
You can go swimming/go out in rain as long as you use good judgment. Avoid washing off ROGAINE®. If possible, apply ROGAINE® to a dry scalp after swimming. Try not to let your scalp get wet from the rain after applying ROGAINE®.

Old thread, but since it came on top of googles search result I'll add my thoughts. I saw a guy on youtube that used a syringe with a needle to apply his RU solution. Same must work for minoxidil. Just seems easier to reach the scalp without touching the actual hair if you use a thin needle to just drip with. Have anyone tried this?

rogaine liquid comes with a nozzle thing that makes it easy enough to bring it directly to the scalp.
i applied it once in the morning and it definitely made the styling worse. so, ive been using at night, washing out in the morning, and hair looks normal all day. or as normal as balding hair can look, LOL.
