Switching From Finasteride To Dutasteride

I'm starting a post to help people who are thinking about switching from Finasteride to Dutasteride. I found it difficult to find a genuine story, backed up by photos, relating to this decision.

First of all, a brief history:
  • I started shedding whilst in my early twenties, and whilst at Uni (I was at Uni 2003-07). I didn't realise at the time though that this was me losing my hair. I had tons of hair! I just used to put a towel around the back of my neck and over my shoulders to protect my clothes from being covered by my hair. I didn't even understand that my hair was thinning by the time I graduated.
  • Once graduated, I started working. I understood then that my hair was thinning badly due to the age group of the people I found myself surrounded by. So I probably Googled things and I started Minoxidil lotion. Strangely, even though this must have happened around 2010-11, I remember walking home from the pub with my old man (who has decent hair) and a group of youths shouted "baldy!" at me.
  • Minoxidil lotion continued for a year (the lotion was a real pain) before I learnt about Propecia. Getting Propecia from my UK GP was a real struggle. Eventually I was referred to a dermatologist who sent a letter to my GP to say he was OK with me starting Propecia.
  • I continued on legit Propecia + Minoxidil for many years, complaining about the cost. Without noticing, my hair did improve though (I can see that thanks to Facebook!). But it took years! So anyone that is thinking about giving up after 6 months should stick with it.
  • Around 2012-13 I became fed-up with the cost of Propecia. I also had long moved out my parent's home and to the other side of the country. I couldn't change my doctors tho for fear of not getting another private prescription for Propecia! So I remember asking on a forum about generic and someone old me about Dr Singh and the minoxidil Direct website. So I got in touch with Dr Singh and started generic finasteride 5mg cut into quarters. I also found the greatest invention ever, generic Minoxidil foam. Still not ideal but so much easier than the lotion! The generic finasteride was still expensive but not anywhere near private prescription + Propecia from Lloyds Pharmacy. I also introduced Nizoral 2% and use that twice a week.
  • Dr Singh was unable to prescribe finasteride around 2015 so I've been getting it from Dr Edgar since then. Same amount: 5mg cut into quarters.
  • From this time until two months ago, I did not worry about my hair. My hairline has never been the greatest but I've had full coverage over the rest of my head. It's also worth mentioning that I was overweight until around 2010. So I decided to change my life around and get into shaped. I lost around 40% of my body weight and reached my goal of running a marathon in under 3 hours. I don't run that kind of distance anymore, but I do run 4/5 times a week and stay in shape.
  • Up until 2 months ago, I didn't noticed a single one of my hairs falling out since a year or so into finasteride (I can only say that because I stopped finasteride 2 months ago and I see the odd hair of mines in the sink, stuck to the mirror, floor, but strangely not on my bed pillow). I was due to get another year's worth from Dr Edgar but I noticed my hair has become thin again, and my temples are showing. I can't believe I hadn't noticed before now!!! So I asked to switch to dutasteride, he said no. So I found a hairloss website that suggested introducing 0.5mg dutasteride once a week can help for someone who has been on finasteride for years, but he hasn't agreed yet (still waiting on him to phone me...). So I thought, I'm going to try life without finasteride and see what happens... I did find a post of someone who said they quit finasteride and minoxidil on my Google searches and they said they had amazing results. I now wonder how genuine that was because again, no photos.
  • I didn't panic, stayed on minoxidil and tried not to worry. Then I saw my first hair. This created a panic so I started Googling. Do I go back on finasteride or knowing that had become ineffective or do I start dutasteride. Couldn't get dutasteride so just sat it out for a month but I noticed my temples getting even thinner. So I found a post suggested that minoxidil can cause hairloss in the areas it is applied.
  • So last weekend, having read through a post started by a forum member called Kombo, I decided to re-start finasteride and take dutasteride once a week. No-one would prescribe both drugs though. So I had to make a choice. So I've chosen Dutasteride. I started taking dutasteride yesterday morning.
Hopefully I haven't missed anything. That is pretty detailed though. If I need to come back and make corrections/changes, I'll make them in red. So I took the attached photos before starting Dutasteride.

So you did not take duta once a week and finasteride the rest of the week? How often do you use duta alone then?

No-one would prescribe both drugs, so just 0.5mg Dutasteride every day.

I was on Finasteride for about 13 years. Was shedding a lot from last Sept (coinciding when my mum fell ill), so switched to Dutasteride earlier this year fearing that finasteride had stopped working. Began taking it at end of March and literally just hitting the 6 month mark.

I get my Dutasteride from Dr Edgar. Why did he turn you down? Because you also wanted to carry on taking finasteride too? Everyone has pretty much said to me you only need to take one or the other.

Since switching meds, I actually think the shedding has gotten worse. I've just made a bigger post regarding it in this thread https://www.hairlosstalk.com/intera...art-to-the-test-at-least-1-year.117617/page-3

Happy to repost here. But I'm being advised across the board to stick with the new meds. 6 months is still far too early and others have reported shedding too. Would like to know if there's anything else I should add to my regime. Currently I only use Nizoral and (very recently) Regenepure DHR shampoo.

Hi SS,

At first he said I should stay one finasteride as it had stopped my hair loss, and he said that’s the best you could expect from finasteride. Then he made a statement suggesting switching from generic finasteride to Proscar. I questioned that but he has never explained that suggestion.

So I was adamant that I wanted to slowly introduce dutasteride and supplied photos to illustrate the decline in effectiveness of finasteride. He emailed back to say he would phone me on monday (7 days ago). I’m still waiting on that call...

With regards to shedding, it’s hard for me to know what is normal/natural hair loss compared to ‘shedding’. My partner’s hair is absolutely everywhere, yet she doesn’t call that a shed. Since starting finasteride all those years ago, I never found any of my hairs. Even on the inside of a hat when I’ve been wearing one. Now that can’t be healthy can it? It’s almost like finasteride just stopped my hair cycle.

My hair has definitely thinned a fair amount in that time (must be around 8 years), especially the temples, but without me noticing it falling out.

In my recent 8 week break from any form of hair loss treatment, I did find the odd hair on my shoulder, face, sink, and 5 hairs on the mirror (that was a week in between house being cleaned). I don’t think that’s a shed though. There also doesn’t appear to be any on my pillow. I’d think this would be an obvious indication if someone is experiencing a ‘shed’.

Are you on generic or Avodart?

I should add that I’m glad I took an 8-week break. Had I found those hairs when I suddenly switched to dutasteride, I would have been panicking and blaming the dutasteride.

I’m curious how was your hair at it’s worst and when would you say that was?

Did you have overall thinning and scalp showing anywhere?

Did you go below baseline when starting finasteride for a few months?

Thanks, and great story. I especially like the underlined sentence because I’m only 4 months on finasteride :)

Hi Shmerty, I'm on Avodart. Literally just had my second prescription arrive at the weekend. Dr Edgar has to do a phone consultation before he can prescribe Dutasteride, which is obviously what you're waiting on. He is very good but I did need to chase him a couple of times as I think he is exceptionally busy.

And yeah, I haven't got a clue on the shedding thing really. I'm seriously losing a crazy amount of hairs in the shower at present - scary amounts, in fact - but I've compared my hair to 3 years ago and it doesn't seem any worse in the photos. I have had a hair transplant in the meantime, but that was to bulk up my hairline. My girlfriend insists that the amount I lose in the shower is normal but I can't see how it can be!

I definitely suffer from overall thinning, but crown area and temples are the worst. 2010/11 was when I was thinnest in the crown area.

I don’t know if I went below baseline when I started finasteride. It was so long ago. I don’t think I did though.

I have started dutasteride. Got a private prescription though so just get it from Pharmacy. I’m on generic though just because it’s cheaper.

I looked at your photo. Has it always been like that after every shower? I was surprised at the frequency you wash your hair. I read an article bemoaning the ‘washing your hair accelerates hair loss advice’. It talked about the absurdity that the hair wouldn’t fall out naturally if you didn’t wash it. Wind, head rubbing against pillow, putting on a jumper, etc. At best the hair would stay on your head for a few days longer, but at the end of the day, if it’s weak it will fall out eventually.

It instead suggested keeping the scalp as clean as possible, allowing follicles to breath, and avoid wearing too much product. This was to promote new hair growth cycle.

I’ve no idea when and where I read it though. It was one of the millions of hair loss advice articles by some expert. This is my approach as it suits my lifestyle better.

Is your pillow covered in hair in the mornings?

LOL at thinkinng finasteride or dutasteride is enough in 2018. Get on a real regimen dude. You're still slowly losing it on either finasteride or dutasteride.

What would you advise adding to a regime beyond Dutasteride/Finasteride? I currently take 0.5mg dutasteride daily plus shampoo with Nizoral and Regenepure DR (both ketoconazole shampoos). Anything else I can add?

I've been reluctant to add minodinixl. I wear a lot of hairspray and concealer and having to add a topical solution would interfere with that. Also, I tried minodoxinil when I was about 19 or 20 and don't think it worked for me at all.

Any recommendations very welcome!

Hey,
I've only really noticed the increased shedding over the last year, and especially so during the last few weeks/months on Dutasteride. That photo was taken after a particularly brutal shed 2 weeks ago. Only thing is though, I have photos of my hair from exactly 3 years ago - same lighting and angle as the ones shown in the other thread, and my hair actually looks worse 3 years ago (albeit very marginally - and I did have an hair transplant in the meantime to bulk the hairline).

I wash my hair every 2-3 days. That's not that frequent? I read conflicting things that washing your hair is good for the hair, especially if you're using organic products and ketoconazole shampoos, which are another part of the regime. Plus the massaging helps with circulation. I think it's all quite debatable?

But yes, unfortunately, I do wear an awful lot of product - hairsprays, putty and concealer. I have super fine hair and it's long, so it's only way to keep it in place and give it body. Is why I also steer clear of topical products such as minoxidinl. Just don't know how/when I could apply those.

No, I don't really notice any other shed hairs other than in the shower. Maybe 1 or 2 on my laptop when I'm working or on my pillow. But I don't think they can fall out during the day cos of the hairspray I use! My gf thinks that accounts for why I notice so many fall out when I shower.

Yeah you're gonna have to suck that up. Add oral minoxidil (loniten), RU or CB (I suggest RU) and dermastamping (I say a derminator). RU is the most important of these by farrrrrrr.

For RU, do you (or anyone else?) use the ready-made solution from here? https://anageninc.com/ru58841-solution-50ml.html?ref=1

Is that the best and simplest way to obtain it?

Thanks
S

RU costs a fortune (compared to legitimate GSK Avodart) and is still a experimental drug at best.

and that is me assuming that Anageninc is even selling the real thing, who is to say that they aren't mixing baking soda with Ethanol?

I was on finasteride 1 yr, then switched. No sides on finasteride, no regrow.
And your hair’s doing noticeably better on dutasteride?
