Switching From Topical To Oral Minoxidil

Greetings,

I am trying to gain advice from anyone who has made the switch from topical to oral minoxidil. I have been using topical for over 2 years and my dermatologist suggests that i change to oral to further thicken/preserve the hairs on my hairline. Being that I am only 21 and am in the early stages of recession, multiple derms I've seen assure me that oral minoxidil is the most suitable option for me, and finasteride is not yet needed.

My question is how should i go about transitioning from topical twice daily to oral minoxidil? I have been prescribed 0.5mg to start and may use 1mg in the future. Is this switch possible without losing the hairs i have retained using topical minoxidil? Would anyone advise against this switch- Why? What time of the day is best to take it? Any advise or anecdotes are greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Some of the guys taking oral minoxidil are shedding non stop. I don't understand why those dermatologist are advising you to take oral vs topical and avoiding finasteride if you are in the early stages. The early stages is when you want to start finasteride.

Shedding is not balding, though I agree oral minoxidil is a strange choice.

They are probably worried about the side effects of finasteride.

I have found topical+needling superior to oral minoxidil, i have been taking between 10 and 20mg since october.

Derm is hesitant about finasteride because of my age i think. Do you reckon Ru58841 would be worth while for now?

I think oral minoxidil is making a resurgence in Australia, as it seemed to be the main line of defence recommended by all the derms i saw. My latest derm stated there is a promising new study coming out from Melbourne university soon, but for what its worth they may just be following protocol and avoiding finasteride risks. Unfortunately i'll suffer further androgen miniaturisation as a result! Do you think Ru58841 (or other topicals) would also be worth while?

Not a big fan of drugs you have to get from China. I would look into a topical finasteride minoxidil combo instead.

It does seem to be making a bit of a comeback in Oz and U.S.

Dr Davin Lim is another Oz doctor who talks about oral minoxidil on YouTube.

Dr Rodney Sinclair, similarly. You’d think that they must be seeing good results somewhere.

I have to echo what most users said on here and say that finasteride is the first line of defence as it actually adresses the root cause.

I took oral - 5mg a day
The pills are very cheap if you buy those in a pharmacy in Thailand you can get a 2 year supply for 30 usd
It works and it's convenient
But I got more of the skin issues so I switched back to topical
AT your age oral will work fine
You still would need finasteride though
Anothet usuelf topical for growth is stemoxydine aka neogenic

Did you lose hair where there was no hairloss previously once you dropped oral minoxidil? I have been taking oral since october but it's not filling in my crown as well as topical minoxidil and needling, would like to drop it.

for me minoxidil - oral or topical - has the effect of making hair ticker in caliber, reduce shedding and that is in combination with stemoxydine

Both work equally well, oral is much cheaper and more convenient
