only 8 months is too little....
how is your progress?

give it a full year before deciding on anything... my hairloss stopped and has been pretty solid since I started three years ago...

my front has just thinned a little bit, but enough to make me decide to switch to dutasteride...

Not after 8 months. My best spell on finasteride. was between months 14 and 16; whereas I've been taking dutasteride. for 2 years and the improvements/regrowth after shed are still coming through.

Thanks, I will stick with finasteride. for at least a year. My hair loss has slowed down but not much regrowth yet especially on the crown area , my hairline has a few tiny hairs popping up but thats it . I know it takes time but it just gets frustrating with just minimal results.

^^^ whats the thinking here?

why shouldnt someone start on dutasteride from the very beginning? if it inhibits DHT more effectively than propecia, why not go withthat from the beginning?

just curious

Here are some reasons why, I wrote this to another poster recently

"Definately try finasteride first.

It only inhibits type 2 5AR, unlike dutasteride which inhibits type 1 as well. There are people in the world born without the type 2 enzyme, but no similar "biological model" exists for dutasteride.

Finasteride has been around much longer, and there's lots of studies on it. At huge doses on monkeys, varying doses on people for different purposes, people of a variety of different ages...

Dutasteride has only one study i believe on people, and it wasn't 18-to-something hair loss sufferers like the propecia trials, the people were all middle aged or elderly, and BPH sufferers.

Also, as i said, finasteride has been around longer, and when faced with a choice between two similar drugs, opting for the one that has been around the longest is always a good idea."

Inhibiting half of type I is sexy.

Jayman,
The Avodart is going well, my back has thickened up considerably with the help of minoxidil and my thinning is no longer noticable in the back. However, my hair line seems to be shedding, but I do not blame this on the Avodart. My hairline was shedding well before I was on either treatment so I am going to add spironolactone 5% cream to the hairline as soon as it arrives in the next few days.

mbehr22,
I was only on propecia for 3 months, so I can't really evaluate how it worked, but my hair is looking infinitely times better than it was on June 1st when I first started my treatments. I experienced no side effects with either medications.

I also want to add that for the first couple of months on minoxidil and propecia, I was losing hair like CRAZY. I would probably lose about 100-150 hairs when applying minoxidil. I thought it would never stop, but it did. So make sure you stick with your regimen because the shedding will subside.

I also bit the bullet and ordered dutasteride last Friday. I'll have been on finasteride for about 3 months by the time I start dutasteride. I figure if 2 capsultes of dutasteride/week inhibit the same amt of DHT that 5mg of finasteride did, why not.

And using 2 capsules/week I almost eliminate the 5ar1 inhibition.

Then again I also needle my head and use Ozbrew and Hydrocortisone...So maybe I'm a  :freak:

Is there a danger to doing both at the same time? I've been on finasteride for 3 month. I'd like to try it for a year (already bought the supply). However, I actually have a prostate problem and would like to try avodart. Is it dangerous to do them together or just overkill?

I want to start dutasteride but I would be getting it online as I cannot get a script for it. I currently have a script for Propecia so I know it is genuine. However, there is no guarantee on whether the dutasteride will be genuine since I will have to order it from an online pharmacy.

So is there any harm in taking the dutasteride twice weekly with Propecia in on the off days? This would just to be cover my *** incase it is not the avodart is not real.

no harm. that's a smart idea if you aren't sure of the authenticity.

overkill unless you're unsure about the authenticity of one of the drugs. otherwise, it's overkill. finasteride cannot compete with the power of dutasteride, so pick one or the other.
