Hello everyone

I am new on here and was wandering if any of you could help me further.

Some have suggested Saw Palmetto, acupuncture to scalp, where as others say just learn to live and accept it which i can understand because it is natural but it is unlucky for some. I have also been suggested hair tonic. I am currently taking nanogen [nanofibres] to cover up the thin areas of scalp.

I have auto immune thyroid disease which has been treated and i am prone to anxiety and depression. So it could be a mixture of Alopecia areata and Male Pattern Baldness as my father is bald.

So to cut a long story short, I am 26 years old. I am on minoxidil 2% which isn't helping [been on it for a month and notice some shedding]. The next step is propecia. My dermatologist prescribed me betnovate lotion which is nothing really. The Belgravi a centre in London is too far, they offered me minoxidil at 12.5%, with Azelaic cream, Propecia 1mg but this is 12 months course and costs over £1,000 and include a laser comb together etc. Otherwise it is 6 months but they encourage you to go for a year.

I then went to the Hospital group and they suggested minioxiprogesterone [minoxidil 5%] and progesterone together as Progesterone contains a DHT blocker. I get different thoughts and views from different specialists and not sure who to go with or what to do??????

I heard about Propecia and the side effects such as libido loss, erectile dysfunction and impotence and it did say "extreme cases it can cause breast enlargement." I was like wow!!! I do not want to become a woman!!

I have taken citalopram [milder Prozac to treat depression] this made me loss my libido, but some anti-depressants are common to cause those side effects. I do not want to loss my libido [sex drive again] having done so on anti-depressants.

I would like to know if any of you have experienced the above side effects as I am a little sceptical and apprehensive about taking new medication bare in mind i am on others [Clonazepam] as well as levothyroxine for my thyroid.

My GP knows sod all about the drug. They have heard of regaine but not minoxidil 2% or Propecia and when I went to saw my doctors they looked it up. The only ones that know are those who have used above treatments and pharmacists, trichologists, etc. What I have been told is that what I really what is something to BLOCK DHT formation, and vasodilators like minoxidil doesn't?! It has made my scalp itchy.

What is your experience with Propecia and how harmful are side effects? When did you notice change? My hair is falling out like leaves. When I comb it and it sheds. Perhaps I am worrying too much and stress can make matters worse. I have been through some stress and trauma.

Someone did reassure me saying “Sean, you are good looking no matter what, this only means you are human and facts of life, it is natural, not a disease or virus, so do not was your time on these treatments, tonics or gimmicks because it is expensive and you will end up not the person you should be.

Look what happened to Michael Jackson with so much plastic surgery, face lifts, hair transplants, drugs and cosmetic treatment.

Cliff Richard spent a fortune on hair transplants, cosmetic surgery as did Anne Robinson [Weakest link].

He then said "Remember Prince William is going bald and you are not the only one and footballers like Wayne Rooney have baldness and some start much younger than you?!" Just accept yourself for who you are.

So I am not sure what to do? What I do know is that I am losing hair and very fast. I am Eurasian and my hair use to be Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee thickness!! :(

For the sort of thing I do I would like to look well groomed and presentable.

Thanks for reading and I hope someone can relate to me or let me have some informative advice.

Kind regards

Sean Moon
