The Five O-clock Shadow And It's Effect

I saw an old friend one day and he was bald like I am, he had the coolest head shave ever(no five o clock shadow) I didn't want to ask him how he got his head like that because we we're at a local store and I didn't want to call him out like that, I've tried razors and my receding hairline is very profound ( norwood 6)
The hair I have left is very dominant and I need to know how to get rid of the shadow look it leaves, any advice would be great, I want to turn the page and get back in top shape again at the gym, at this point I really want to move on with my life.
