My Hair.jpg

Ok, so here is my story. When I was about 19 I started to lose my hair gradually. So I would say from about 19 to 23 it began to slowly thin. Me being me, I googled this issue until I found out every and any cure possible. After researching I found my only two options were Propecia (Finasteride) or Rogaine foam for men. After some careful research I was to afraid of propecia, and putting Rogaine foam on my head twice a day felt like it was going to be a hassle. So after dipping into natural stuff like B-Vitamins, and Saw-Palmetto, which helped a very little. I knew after that I had to make a decision. And by the way, a hair transplant was NOT an option do to the amount of money.

So after a long time of putting it off, and trying everything I could I went to see a doctor. I already knew it was Male Pattern Baldness. My question was what is better rogaine or propecia. I did not have insurance so I went to a hair transplant Dr. and it was a free consultation. That’s right you don’t want to pay a Dermatologist. We spoke about a few things, he had some questions, ever use steroids (only 3 shots in HS) which was nothing. Is your Dad bald or if you have an older brother is he bald? No they both have hair. But my Mom’s Uncles and father were bald. But not until later years 40’s and 50’s. So he said I somehow had the gene in me, obviously. He said the steroids probably didn’t play a part in it. That might be true since it was such a little amount, but I had a feeling it just sped up the process that would have happened years down the line. But either way I was stuck with this issue and wanted to change it.

Of course my hair was a HUGE part of my life, always had a hairstyle. So anyway we go over a few things, and again my options are rogaine or propecia. So I go with the propecia, he said if I didn’t have a side effect within 2 weeks I’m good. So I got a free trial and start taking the pill. Still scared to death cause of all the reviews online but hey figured I’d try it. Told my girlfriend if she sees any difference in my sexual performance to let me know ASAP!

Well I had no issues and 3 ½ years later I pretty much have my hair back, and I even get compliments from time to time. And all I can do is look at my girlfriend and we start to laugh because I would have been very bald and now people actually compliment my hair again.

When I first started Propecia it was about $68.00 a month, and yes it sucked paying. I mean my student loan was only $55.00 a month. But it worked for me and I had no issues paying $68.00 a month for hair. But about a year ago I made the choice to switch to Generic Propecia, which is just called Finasteride. Downside was it doesn’t come in 1MG pills, but in 5MG. So I cut the pill into 4’s. Best part is, it works fine, no side effects still, and its only $9.00 for 30 pills. So after cutting them I get about 120 pills for $9.00. And that makes my bank account and me very happy!

I took the chance, I didn’t over think and Finasteride worked for me, thankfully!! This is just a short sum of my story, when this happened I was devastated. By the way, about 6 months ago I decided to try Rogaine foam just for the front of my hairline. I wanted a stronger thicker hairline, so I started using it at night only once every 2 weeks or so. After a month or two I noticed solid gains in the front of my hair. Hair got a lot thicker and more hair grew. I think this was do to taking Finasteride so long and my hair follicles in front just had to be waken up a little more. Now I use the Rogaine foam once a month only on the hairline to keep it strong.

Good luck to anyone who starts a treatment, my advice is take a chance do what you can and see what works for you. This is why I wanted to share my story cause I would love to help others on this issue. I went through it and it sucked.

Wow you got an amazing regrowth. When did you notice your hair getting better? I'm on month 7.5 and though I see fine hairs regrowing, I'm still shedding. I'm on the big 3

great story. All people considering Propecia, but 'scared to death' as you put it, about the side effects issue, should read this

regarding going to see transplant surgeons for advice on hairloss in general - I would just add a note of caution to remember that they have their own self-interest (financial) agenda, so advice you get from them may not always be unbiased and impartial. I'm sure most are honest and upstanding etc, but just be aware.

Thanks. I think it was around towards the end of the second month. I did shed a little, but it was mostly very fine small hairs that I think were stuck in the inactive follicle. So my hair did get maybe a little thinner from the shed, but not as much because the hairs were so small and fine that I think my hair follicle just pushed them out and they weren't even showing on my head anyway. Stick with it, take the pill everyday and be consistent, and i know this sounds hard but try not to think of it. By month 5-6 I saw a dramatic improvement, and after 3 years I still see my hair growing more and more each year.

Well of course the Doctor went over hair transplants, laser treatments etc. But he wasn't trying to sell me when I said I couldn't afford it. But yeah its their job to try and get a $20,000 hair transplant job out of you. But it was the point I didn't have insurance, and I saved over $100 just for the visit. Yea I had to hear options that I couldn't afford but I was happy to hear them. He happily wrote a prescription for me and I haven't seen him since.

Oh and btw I did try the "laser Comb" bought it for about $200 on ebay. I used it for about 2 months, I did see some peach fuzz growing and after awhile my hair looked a little fuller. But the hair eventually just fell out and that would be it. I ended up selling it for $220 on ebay after the propecia started to work. Again, I tried everything that I could! I think I even rubbed olive oil and egg whites on my head a few times, but hey you do what you can.

My skin did not get oily, and like I mentioned above I did shed a little but mostly little hairs that probably were not even showing. I didn't get any kind of side effects not even the oily skin. The shedding is normal and its actually a good sign from what I know. Thanks!

I use it about once or twice per month (only in the front hair line) just to thicken up the hairline as much as I can. But over 95 percent of what you see is from the Finasteride. But I do see the hairline getting thicker once I started to apply the rogaine. I do not use it twice a day like it says or even once per week. But hey it works for me.

Thank for taking the time to share your story. This is indeed an amazing regrowth just with finasteride. I have few questions just for clarification and for educational purposes for all of us.

A) If I understand you correctly, you shed 1 1/2 month after finasteride start, but you only saw tiny colorless "baby" hair, and not terminal? Were they all approx. same length, not so pigmented, and thin diameter?

B) And in how many days/weeks/months did your "shed" stop?

C) In how many days/weeks/months did you feel that your scalp started showing signs of initial filling (not seeing scalp skin beneath flimsy hair)?

D) This question is important. I see you had extensive temporal recession along with diffuse thinning. Did the thinning scalp parts fill in first before the hairline started growing/expanding to bald temples or it was simultaneously within same growth spurt all over? I am trying to figure out if you saw new hair all over on completely bald spots, started sprouting same time as you were seeing results in diffuse thinning.

E) Your hair is incredibly full and you say it is still growing after over 3 years. After how many months of starting finasteride, would you say you got satisfactory "normal" growth already?

F) You say, hair is still growing, are they filling in more, or the hairline is spreading even more?

G) How do you know minoxidil once a month is paying off when you feel your hair is still growing and filling in due to finasteride. otherwise?

Sorry for so many questions, just short response will do, and you may ignore any part you feel make no sense, no pressure, no worry! Thanks again

I just lost what I had wrote :kaputt:.... Well I'll try again. Just like you were I'm in the position were Propecia is not an option for as of now. I'm very scare to try it and that it might have some side effects, but I will like to ask you some questions that will really help with my decision. I was looking at your pictures and my hair its not were your hair was. I have more hair than what you had before treatment. I don't have any crown recession or thinning. What really bothers me are my temples. Any ways here are the questions. 1. I can't really tell from the pictures, but did you grow hair on the temple area? 2. after how many weeks/months did you know that it was working for you? 3. Did you experience an shedding? If you did for how long and when did stop? 4. If you do have side effects and you stop using Pro/finasteride do they stop? 5. Does your hair still falls? Thank you!!!!

Hi! Fantastic results :) Your hair looks great! How long before the temples filled in well enough so you could style and things? I'm on 6 months so far but not a lot of regrowth at temples only a lot of vellus hair

Wow ...... My hair basically looks like yours did before you got on your regimen. I'm done screwing around trying to find the alternative stuff. I think I'm willing to try out what you did. The front of my hair is the worst. It's depressing how much scalp I can see, especially if I try to give my hair any volume. The texture too, it's just so freakin' dead.

I seriously can't get over the pics. Did you change anything about your diet? Do you workout? Any other known health conditions?

Do you work out? Do you think working out has an influence on the balding process?

STOP RIGHT THERE!! Do not cut 5MG pills into 5 parts thinking it will give you 1MG each. What the hell!! Pills are not made equal, they are not evenly distributed, one corner of the pill could have 1.5mg in it the other could have 0.5 the other could have 3MG, the other could have 0mg! They are not evenly balanced!!

When pills are designed the MG is selected, crushed and put into a neat pill shape, this process in no way is designed to have MG equally spread out. You are given yourself a overdose possibly.
