Excellent article, thank you for posting this.

I never understood George W. Bush's fear of stem cell research, it's not like they're killing babies and making meds out of them. Bush's policies have delayed medical research and possibly deprived the world of new treatments.

Um, that is very false. Embryonic stem cells aren't the best source of stem cells. In fact, now that the ban on government funding has been lifted, scientists still aren't harvesting stem cells from embryos. Lifting the ban was entirely political.

dont want to make this political but you are extremely wrong on that. stop spewing your right wing crap ...any scientist can tell you the ban by the bush regime put science back years because of that. unreal...get your facts straight

get your facts right!

there was no ban on actual stem cell research, the ban was on future federal funding for it. So private companies can do whatever the hell they liked.

You come on a hairloss forum and your only post is an aggressive political post that makes you look like a fool.

Lol, that's so funny. I'm a registered Democrat, campaigned for Obama, and was accused not 30 minutes ago of being too socialist. Irony, I say.

But, back to the point: You're retarded. A president can't ban research. He stopped federal funding to scientists who were doing that research. If they got their money privately, they were allowed to do whatever the hell they wanted. Nevertheless, embrionic stem cells are not the best source of stem cells. Look it up and stop relying on Fox for your information.

well i wonder where stem cell research would be now if we had 8 years with bush and federal funded stem cell research... so just to put it out there he did set us back a long way with stopping allot of funding...
But hey whats done is done..
Lets just hope the federal funding and private funding will speed things up a litle :D
Would be greate to get a stem cell fix out there fast :woot:

i have debated with anti stem cell activists before (and most of them are bush-like retards) and i'll clear it up, most effective treatments are from EMBRYONIC stem cells and for some prospective we have been using adult stem cells since the 1960's but only have been using embryonic stem cells since 1998

ASCs can only become a few cells whereas ESCs can become many different cells ESCs can do everything ASCs can do but are much harder and more expensive to obtain so if ASCs can be used they will but as far as reserch goes ESCs are much more useful because less is known about them

for the record the people who have been treated for AA have been with ADULT cells and bush's cut on ESC research is detrimental because the majority of stem cell funding would be federal rather than private and (well i don't know about USA) but in the uk "controversial" research has to get a government "green light" before anything "controversial" is done

the deafness thing might be good news for one or my deafening mates but i seriously doubt the "hairs" in your ear have anywhere near the same anatomy as the hair on your head, but good post anyway :)

I just want to weigh in on this by backing someone uk up; what he says is the truth of the matter here. Adult stem cells are only "multi-potent", able to become only a few select types of cells based on the tissue they reside in; whereas EBC are "pluri-potent", able to become anything. It is also true that politics have foolishly set back this important life saving research for no logical reason; any scientist in the field will tell you that.
