The odd case of Arnold Schwarzenegger's hair loss

Much like Howard Hughes, Arnold seems like a guy who should have gone bald eventually, especially when you compare his hair to his father's:

In this picture Gustav Schwarzenegger would be 23 years old at least, since he joined the Austrian Army at that age. His insignia seems to be that of a grunt too, and it was common back then to take pictures at such milestones.

I believe he was 35 or 36 in this one. Again, we don't know the exact date but Wikipedia states that after joining the German Wehrmacht in November 1939 he was promoted to Master Sergeant (Hauptfeldwebel) and his neck insignia looks like a sergeant's.

He ended up bald eventually:

Meanwhile look at 18 year old Arnold here. This picture was taken in 1965.

Not a bad hairline, but kinda crappy for an 18 year old. He already had quite a bit of temple recession, especially when you compare it to this picture from 1960, when he was 13:

I'd expect someone like that to be bald by his 30s or mid 30s at the most, especially considering that his dad ended up quite bald and had a similar hairline to him. But he did a crap ton of steroids back when we knew little of how they worked and their consequences, and there weren't any available treatments for hair loss, and reaches his late thirties in a pretty good state. Some people say that he was wearing a piece for Terminator 2 but I doubt they had the tech for such a good piece in 1984, back when Terminator 1 was made. I doubt Arnold's hair is natural today and think he has had work done in his 50s or 60s, but it's amazing to think that he kept his hair for so long while roiding so much and without any treatments. Shows you how hard it is to predict hair loss using pictures.

I'm pretty sure he had a hair transplant.

I agree with you, that's why I wrote at the end of the thread that I believe he had work done in his 50s or 60s. But Finasteride was approved for prostatic hyperplasia in 1992 when he was 45, and for hair loss in 1997. It's astonishing that he has hair today despite years of steroid abuse, and that he managed to maintain his hairline without finasteride for so long.

I think we're just exaggerating the speed and aggressiveness of hair loss, a lot of people can have very slow loss. And we all know that genes can be unpredictable. But it is possible that he's had work done nowadays, and it's very impressive that he kept that hair while on steroids.

If Arnold did have hair transplants they look awfully natural. Now his buddy Sly Stallone that's a different story. Stallone wears a frontal hair piece which looks pretty darn natural.

Arnold is a class act. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and spend time with him several times over the years and he really is a good human being. With that in mind, having seen him face to face many times, he has definitely thinned out, but its well within the margins of what would be expected from a man of his age. I don’t think he ever got a transplant of any kind. Now bear in mind I wasn’t specifically looking for it, but I have never seen visible evidence of such a procedure, he’s never mentioned it or seemed the slightest bit concerned about his hair in the way that someone who does is, and I’ve never gotten the impression he cares enough to spend money on it or have to sideline any portion of his life to recover from it. He’s one of those people who doesn’t go to a doctor or a hospital unless he literally has to and someone of that persuasion isn’t very likely to get a surgery he doesn’t medically need.

Today's Stallone looks pretty uncanny to me, and I was suspicious of his hair since I was a teen, even though I was very bad at spotting hair pieces back then. Maybe it was simply due to his facial surgery though.

He's been a role model for me since I was a kid. Thanks for your comment.

I've met Arnold as well. He's all natural. Sly wears a topper that's very natural in appearance as he does expose the hairline with his style.
