Thoughts on stopping Rogaine Foam with this scenaro in mind.

I am a chic in shock over how much my front/crown/vertex area has gone down hill in a year! I have diffuse thinning all over the top with some vertical part lines going downward some from there. Luckily my hair is pretty poofy/wavy so I can camoflauge it some still, but it's getting hard.

One thing is I still haven't found the answer to why I have mustard type yellow tinge toward the ends of some of my fingernails and the vertical ridges. It's been there since last fall when I started oral spironolactone, rogaine foam, yasmin, (and started fincar last week). I figure there must be something going on in me cuz I don't work with my hands to say it's a stain. Some days they look better than others, but it's never all clear.

So now I'm wondering if doing Rogaine foam 2 x day could be doing more harm (ie it irritates my scalp and probably causes many hairs to fall out) than good. I mean I had shed problems before any treatment I started. So I never did have a shed phase with anything I ever tried--- it's always been there since Aug 05.

Does anyone know if you aren't sure the problem you have is Androgenetic Alopecia if rogaine or oral spironolactone for that matter can cause it to get worse?? I have diffuse thinning all over which looks Androgenetic Alopecia to me as well as probably CTE. My mom has diffuse thinning overall the top of her head like me, but she has no pain or anything like that. Anyone think after 9 months of minimal if anything help from Rogaine foam that since I may have something else going on in addition to hair loss that I might as well save my $? And what happens if they can't pinpoint what's causing my nails to be like this? Anyone hear of someone stopping Rogaine and hair getting better??

I read a post by someone else complaining about yellow fingernails do to roagaine foam. I can't remember if it was on this board though. Its a possibility.

If rogaine is irritating your scalp, its probably a good idea to stop it and see a doctor. You could use emu oil to combat the irritation, but better to speak with a doctor first and see if you should continue the product. I don't believe rogaine would cause you to lose hair, but if it is irritationg your scalp and has not produced any results in 4 months its probably not worth it. Ask your doctor any time you choose to get on a new product.

You are female? Why are you taking fincar? That is surprising to me.

Actually some women who aren't going to get pregnant take propecia or avodart. We can have high dht too, and some women have had success with it. So I'm taking oral spironolactone and fincar now.

I think you may be the first on this board! Well, good luck! At least you don't have to worry about gyno.

Yellow nails can mean there are problems with your liver, diabetes, respiratory disorders or problems with the lymphatic system. Yellow nails can occur many years before the disorder shows up.

It could also be due to that? :freaked2:

I have to see the gyno once a year tho, so I do have to worry about it! :D

It could also be stress. Initial lab results don't show anything bad. My pcp doesn't know what to test. Lovely.

well, actually shortly after starting Rogaine foam, I noticed the fingernails of my index fingers on both hands had been tinted yellow. I only noticed it for maybe 2 days then it disappeared and I think came back once but seems to have all but gone now.

Is it kind of a mustardy yellow or literally a tinge that you have to look real close to see?

yep, that's it

it looks like I stained it with saffron or something, heh.
Are you serious? But yours went away or comes and goes despite using the foam every day? So you aren't concerned that it could be something else cuz it seems only we have this problem?

no, I'm not concerned. Unless you want to give me reason to be? :)

I haven't seen it for a few weeks.

Are you a smoker? I am. I considered that maybe the tobacco smoke was reacting with the minoxidil on my hands to produce the colour.

Hmm, but then, I always clean my hands thoroughly after using minoxidil.

This is strange because according to my (limited) knowledge of nail growth, the discolouration must be an external thing (i.e. a stain). As your nails obviously don't grow very quickly. If I ever get it again, I will scrub it aggressively and see if it can be removed.

In the meantime, it doesn't concern me :)
