To Peesh or not to Peesh, that is the question

For those of you who know me, I was on Avodart for 1.5 yrs and had great follicular results but became allergic to the stuff. I've been off it for a while and I haven't showed signs of returned thinning, but I'm considering trying the finasteride in a few months.

So what would y'all say is the best way to start? I'm considering genuine Peesh cut in half to start. I don't mind a short bout of side effects but don't want to end up on that permanent-side-effects yahoo group in 2 years...ya know? What do you think? I know everyone's different, and I can say I've regained all the libido that dropped while on Avo, but finasteride is a different drug.

Any advice is greatly apreciated.

finasteride has a much shorter half life than dutasteride does and it causes less of a redution of DHT than dutasteride does. As far as I am aware there is no such thing as a permanent side effect other than gyno, which is exceddingly rare and usually only occurs in those taking the full 5mg proscar. These side effects are the same as those of dutasteride, so if you didn;t have them there I doubt you will get them on finasteride. The current thinking is that the effects are caused by the hormonal changes induced by dutasteride/finasteride and not the drug itself. Since finasteride is less potent than dutasteride, you should be in the clear.

Anyway what was your allergic reaction to dutasteride? Is that what you are calling a side effect? It is possible that you will experience the same thing on finasteride, but it is less likely and the effect should go away quicker due to finasteride leaving your system much faster than dutasteride.

The problems I experienced during the last few times I took dutasteride is very, very rare. Yes, my libido was slightly diminished, but the things I had (even after just 2 pills) were:

Dizziness
Headache
Confusion
Rectal Pain
Testicular Pain
Urethral Pain
Signs of Gyno (burning nipples, pectoral pain)

This only happened after about the 1.5 yr mark. I stopped for a few months and then decided to give it another try, but after just 2 pills I had all of these reactions all at once. It's as if my body had a hypersensitive hormonal reaction. I even got epidydimitis (testicular infection/inflamation of the epidydimis). Luckily everything returned to normal in 2 months.

Rectal pain? I don't want to make you the butt of a cheap joke, but in the end I think you might just be trying to make asses out of us all...

 That concludes our puns for this evening.

Seriously, if anything made my rectum hurt and I was sure about it, I would quit taking it.

That is one kind of pain I can not gloss over. What did your doctor say?

Joe.

Well, the only dr. I saw about anything was the epidydimitis. Of course, after all those incidences, you can be sure I quit taking dutasteride ASAP. The Doctor gave me some antibiotics that cured the issue like a charm.

It might be hard to believe that I got all those symptoms but my body must have developed a hypersensitive reaction. Next time I go under any meds like finasteride, I think I'll do it under the supervision of a doctor. It was stupid in the first place to use dutasteride on my own. Luckily the only remaining item from its usage is a head full of hair! There's no doubt the stuff worked in that department.

I guess me option now is finasteride. I'm just wondering if I should start with .5mg and build up to 1mg or what. Obviously I want to minimise side effects.

Z-man after a few months there is still some dutasteride in your system so taking 2 more pills snaps you right back to where you were when you stopped taking the drug. If it still has been only a few months perhaps you can try taking finasteride right now to see if the effects come back. It shoudl be an extreme case and if you are in the clear then you probably can stop worrying. You justy have to hope that since finasteride is weaker than dutasteride you will not react as strongly to it. \

Good luck whatever you decide to do.
