Hi guys,

Nothing too exciting to tell but I need some direction. My Dad is 48 and is almost completly bald, starting losing it around 27 and was very thin by 40. I am 25 and have noticed thinning but it seems in an unusual area.

I have thinning on the vertex but also down the centre of the hair, almost like a center part but a little more. When I shower and dry my hair and just leave it you can't really notice any thinning, the hair falls kind of flat but my temples arent receeding and there is no scalp apart from a small amount at the vertex.

However when my hair is wet, or when it is spiked up and viewed under certain lights you can see a lot of scalp all over the hair. Is this normal? I should add that I do have pretty thin hair anyway and always have. Actually even when it has been rained on and then gets dry it falls into a shape that looks like abald spot up the middle.

My hair defintely looks thinner to me all over when I have it cut short. Is this diffuse thinning or just a stage of male pattern baldness, what will happen next? I have noticed lot of itching on the scalp could this be the Saw or the Nizoral?

I have been taking Saw Palmetto and using Nizoral 3 times a week for about 4 months but have seen no change in my hair (negative or positive). If I have a less than normal pattern loss would Propecia, Proscar etc work for me do you think? Anyone else out there have the same issues?

Thanks

The common pattern of male pattern baldness is that of the Norwood scale - receding temples/hairline + growing bald spot on crown. Then there is Diffuse male pattern baldness which is overall thinning of hair on top while sides and back stay strong. This could be your male pattern baldness, the vertex is at the peak of your round head so its usually the most noticeable spot when it comes to showing scalp - when you start thinning.

When you have spikey hair your scalp is always going to show under bright lights / direct sun light etc. That is not always a fair way to determine thinning.

The scalp itch is common at the onset of male pattern baldness, that is actually what drew my attention to my hair loss!

Propecia is for anyone who is suffering from DHT related hairloss, which is typical heriditary hair loss. You caught it at an early stage, which is good because it is best to start treatment early.

My loss is "diffuse," and not the classic Norwood. My back/crown is OK, but the temples receded a bit, thinning overall on top, with a strong patch still as the front/center hairline. Propecia helped me.

For what it's worth, I've researched the Saw Palmetto issue to death. You gotta understand, I'm seriously obsessive about researching things. Days and days of reviewing web sites and info. And I could find NO credible evidence that it helps hair loss. People tend to think since both SP and finasteride help shrink prostrates, that SP will also help prevent hair loss as finasteride does. It's a logical assumption, but it's also apparently wrong. The drugs don't work the same way.

Propecia, however, does work for nearly everyone. Even if you continue losing hair, you'll be losing it at a slower rate had you not taken it. But odds are you'll at least maintain, and probably gain with it.
