It's hard to find doctors that know anything about female hair loss. Most are clueless

Recommendations -->

Doctor's name
Speciality: (i.e. endocrinologist or dermatologist)
Location
And why the recommendation
Do they take insurance?

Somebody mentioned a Dr. Redmond (endocrinologist) in NY. Unfortanately, he does not take insurance and the first appointment is $500 and each follow-up is $200. Too expensive for me...

Hi VAGirl,

I know your frustration in dealing with doctors. :x I've come to the conclusion that although they are helpful to a certain extent, and I will take into consideration the information and diagnosis they offer me, my treatments and plan of action are something that I just need to figure out on my own.

Anyway, to answer your post and stop my editorial :)

Dr. Vera Price is an expert in women's hair loss. Although my experience with her was bad (oof, was it ever, I will post about it), I do believe she has a lot of knowledge, research and experience in this field. She is located at University of California San Francisco dermatology department. She does take insurance, but check with your insurance first. She requires that you have all your blood tests, a letter from another doctor stating your hair loss experience and a scalp biopsy if you've had one done.

I too am in Northern CA (just moved here). I just came back from the derm this minute! His name was Dr. Trauner and he is in Sutter in Sacramento. I thought he was quite good an knowledgeable. I also liked that he ordered all the correct bloodwork, was friendly, asked about my lifestyle and did not hasten to prescribe anything until the results came back. Also, I called yesteday and got an appointment for the NEXT DAY. Unbelievable. So, so far I would recommend this doctor.

Doctors

Well, I just got back from a dermatologist appointment. Another dissapointment. This was a dermatologist that was recommended.

They both did not order any bloodwork or anything. My 2nd dermatolgist wrote a prescription for spironolactone and told me that there was basically limited to no options.

I'm on the East coast. Northern, Virginia to be exact. I don't know what to do. Again, I've seen two doctors/experts and they both refused to do bloodwork. It's soo fustrating.

Any dermatolgists in VA/DC/MD - please let me know.

I'm glad you've been able to find dermatologist on the West Coast that are good.

Doctors

I just came back from a disappointing appointment with Dr. Barnatt in MD. I had to drive through a torrential downpour to get there and he looked at me for 30 seconds. He told me my loss was a combination of low estrogen / progesterone, low weight, Androgenetic Alopecia, and low iron. He said that he didn't know if it could get better but to stick with Rogaine because that is all there is. This is the 2nd dermatolotgist that I have been to, Dr. Barnatt was recommended to me as one of the best in the DC/MD area. I have given up on dermatologists and have decided that little is known about female hair loss. I feel like I am on my own...

Doctors

Yes, I feel your fustration. I'm in No. VA. I actually went through the same thing today.

Dr. Chadab (MD) derm - nice guy but ran no tests and basically prescribed spironolactone. no tests. no scalp biopsy
Dr. Nigra (DC) derm - rogaine. No tests. No scalp biopsy no nothing

Again, these doctors were recommended but did not do any tests. It's fustrating. You're right you're basically on your own.

It's important that we stick together and help each other out. Anybody out there who has found a good derm - let us know!

Hi girls, I totally understand what you are going through. I went through something similar myself. I posted about Dr. Redmond last week (see my post regarding the Testosterone/FPB thread. If you don't live in NY or can't afford seeing Dr. Redmond, please go and see an endocrinologist. When you call and make the appointment ask the receptionist if the doctor is knowledgeable on the topic of women's hairloss. You really need to have your testosterone level looked at - in my case it was slightly elevated and according to Redmond definitely has an affect on women's hair and skin. And, believe it or not, since my visit with him (which I felt was optimistic) I swear that my hair looks better. Maybe it's because I'm not worrying about it as much or because I'm not staring at it as much in the mirror. He gave me hope and that is what I want to pass on to all of you. Good Luck!

Gynecologist

Ok... this is my third doctor and still nowhere. I've decided to order some of the blood tests myself. I can't keep on going to doctors and not getting the proper blood work done. It's just so freakin' fustrating.

Ironically, this gynecologist new more about hair loss than any of the dermatologists I went too. Her exam was more thorough than any of my other dermatologist. But I'm still shooting in the dark.

This is just such a fustrating experience.

Dr. Redmond

I don't know about Dr. Redmond. I did a search on him and he has got nothing but bad reviews from patients. They say he is a quack x 10! He doesn't give you a scalp biopsy, doesn't do the hair pull test and basically uses the visualization technique <--- not very scientific. However, I would like to mention that I've never seen this man. But if you go on hairsite.com and keratin.com. Patients who've seen him blast him. They also say his visits are short. And if I'm gonna pay $500 for a visit - you better give me at least an hour - even if it's to hear you sing yankee doodle dandy.

I don't know folks but a $500 dollar office visit is high. People also say that he basically prescribes spironolactone and doesn't believe in Telogen Effluvium. He thinks most people have a form of Androgenetic Alopecia. Again, I'm not tring to blast the man because he maybe good but from all the posts I've read - the verdict is - dissapointing.
