Turned Down for Prescription for Proscar!?!?

I went to the dermatologist today for a couple of things. I asked him for prescription of proscar, with the instructions and intent to take 1/4 pill per day. He would not do it!!! He said that insurance would catch on since i am young and that they would know that i don't have problems with my prostate. He said he doesn't do it, that i should go back to whoever gave me propecia and ask for it.

I am frustrated because i have the feeling that most doctors are afraid to write a script for proscar for hair-loss when it is not "technically" FDA approved for hair-loss.

What is your experience and how did you get your prescription for proscar?

How did you go about asking/convincing your doctor?

Blakes 30. Sorry to hear about this. My UK lady doctor has prescribed proscar for about 20 months, and has been impressed with progress, though slow. A patient, sympathetic and observant doctor is a true blessing. Try another doctor, a second opinion could work.
Good luck.

I bought mine from a doctor whose details I found online, I call him.. we spoke for 10 minutes max, I sent the cheque.. he sent the Proscar accompanied by a letter to give to my doctor, I didn't bother passing it on.

if you do have insurance, and you would use it to pay for it, it is technically insurance fraud, that what your Dr is concerned about

if it wasn't for people like you then premiums would be lower on my insurance.

i understand that the insurance will not cover proscar for a young man like me, and that's ok--i don't expect them to

if the doctor would simply write on the prescription the instructions to quarter the pills and take 1/4 pill per day, it is obviously being used for "off-label use"

it is my understanding that doctors can prescribe anything they feel is in the best interest of their patient---i don't think it's insurance fraud at all (especially if he gives instructions to split pill)

Yes, insurance isn't an issue and though Propecia isn't licenced for hairloss, the proscar clinical trials included hair regrowth as a measurable side-effect, so doctors can take account of that aspect.

thats absolutely fine. but you didnt mention that in your original post so we assumed that you were attempting to commit insurance fraud. ask him to write FOR HAIR LOSS rather than TAKE AS DIRECTED. For example: "Take 1/4 tablet per day for hair loss." This protects the doctor and you and if insurance still covers it, well it's their fault.
