Hi all,

First, I'd like to give you some background on my story with hair loss hopefully you can help me identify the reason.

I'm a 33 years old healthy male, I started noticing slight hair loss when I was around 28-29. I never thought to start any treatment because I felt like it was normal. When I was 30, I felt like hair loss and thinning is increasing a bit, I still had full head of hair with no receding hairline. I thought to start Minoxidil however I stopped in around 4 months since I didn't notice any change. Hair loss continued and I started noticing some very light hair spots only on the top my head. Here I decided that I should start a proper treatment so it was when I turned 31, I started taking Propecia and year later I started Minoxidil and was advised also by a dermatologist to add up Priorin.

The hair loss continued without change till now, it has never been always too severe and this light hair spots on top of my head maintained the same size however I had the below observations during the course of the last 2 years:
- Noticed that I'm having severe loss from time to time, so it's like every 3 months or so I get severe hair loss then it goes back to mild or even none after a month until another cycle
- During those cycles of severe hair loss, I also lose hair from all over the body(legs, hand, eyebrows...) and from the sides and lower back of my head
- When the cycle ends, I have very minimal hair loss, sometimes I even felt that I'm reacting very well to the treatment and stopped hair loss until I face this issue again
- I visited many dermatologists and doctors, never got a clear diagnosis about the reason, some said it was male pattern baldness, other said it was regular hair loss, could be due to some stress...
- My mother and father have healthy hair, some history of baldness from mother's side of the family
- No receding hair line, only a little bit on one side of the temples

I'd really like to know your feedback on my situation, if you really think it's male pattern baldness or something else and what do you recommend as a regimen if it was male pattern baldness since my current one doesn't seem to be very effective.

Many thanks for your help.

The loss on the head appears in the genetic male hair loss pattern, but losing body and eyebrow hair along with it might indicate something else.

Have your had your thyroid function checked out? A visit to another Dr may be in order.

So many people come on these forums with a similar story. There is no real test for male pattern baldness. Any hairloss that doesn't fall into a very narrow category of known causes is thrown into the male pattern baldness bucket. This makes it very hard for people to accept things.

I'm regularly doing blood tests like every 3 months and since the last one I made in July everything seemed to be normal, including TSH level.

My case could still be male pattern baldness due to the miniaturization of hair and bit of receding on the right temple. If it's male pattern baldness it would be a slow one or at least the treatment that I'm on(Propecia+minoxidil) is slowing it down but the fact that I'm having cycles of sudden and severe hair loss makes me think that there could be something else. Maybe on top of my male pattern baldness, I'm having cycles of Telogen Effluvium, shedding more than 200 hairs(Thin+Thick) for a month or so then no or very little shedding for 2 months.
