Hey Everyone I need some input. First I just want to say that I've been coming to this site for a few years so I'm not a newbie. My hairline has been slowly receding over a few years (almost 26 now) and the middle of the line is now thinning. I've tried a bunch of topical stuff, but finally decided to go with the Propecia on its own this year. I want to see how I respond to Propecia alone before I add products. It's been just over 4.5 months on 0.5mg/day Propecia.

The first 2 months I did not notice anything. No side effects or progress. I think around month 3 I started to notice an increase in fallout but not too alarming. But the shedding has increased throughout August and now I'm shedding much more hair and the majority of it is in the front (problem) hairline region. When I brush from my forhead up I lose sooo many hairs. I have had no other side effects.

Now like I said, I've been on this site for a while so I'm not trying to do the usual screaming about shedding "Is this normal?" and "Should I continue?" and "When will this stop?" I understand the process.

With that said, however, I can't help but be alarmed at how much hair I'm losing. And the majority of it seems to be thick healthy terminal hairs up front, which kinda confuses me, why would there be sooo many thick terminal hairs shed. My hairline is still receding and the middle is thinning so much that you can easily see scalp which was covered before.

When I examin my scalp up close I'm really not seeing new replacement hairs pop out even in the middle region, which is where the terminal hairs are. If I've been shedding for at least 2 months, than by now some of those shed terminal hairs should be growing back in....right?

At this point I'm not sure what to do. I get sooo depressed when I walk by a mirror and see my hair thinning all up front. last night I came home and decided to brush my hair and with just one run of the brush through the front over 10 hairs came out and hair just continued to fall every pass through. Then just by pulling up (not tugging just adding slight resistance) to the hair up front...hair would just come out of my scalp. That sends those stomach dropping shocks right through you.

I had my blood levels checked (test/esto/dht) before I went on Propecia and estrogen and testosterone were normal and DHT was at the high end of the normal range. I think I will get those levels checked again and think about increasing the dosage....0.7mg. I'm concerned that I may be effecting my folicles enough to shed, but not enough to cycle in stronger. I just need some advise. Last night I reread the " The Propecia Frontal Hair Loss study" article here on HairLossTalk.com.com to feel better and keep my head straight. But I'm starting to wonder if this could be some form of a Telogen Effluvium and what that means.

Please respond with any input. I am really in need of other people to talk to this about right now.

Thanks,
Joe

You are probably encountering a normal shed Joe. It takes for hair to be kicked back into healthy state.

I would try using the recommended dose at 1 mg from here on out.

hey

Do you know why I'd lose so many thick healthy hairs? It seems like the majority of shedding should be hairs in the miniturization process.

Losing thick, terminal hairs is a good sign that Propecia _is_ working Joe. You are going through a hair regrowth cycle induced by finasteride. If you were shedding all vellus hairs, that would be the case of normal male pattern baldness.

You should be pleasantly surprised.

Hey

Still, if a hair is thick, dark, and healthy then it shouldn't be affected by finestride. Only the hairs at some point in the miniturization process should be affected....right? ie. the ones being affected by DHT. I have been wondering about this for a while now.

Everything gets affected by the finasteride -- the finasteride. molecules don't decide what to attack per se. Some follicles will probably be more influenced by the finasteride, but I don't think this has been proven clinically.

Your hair is probably readjusting its shed cycle, and so shedding normal hairs is perfectly good. Perhaps a sign that you will be very receptive to finasteride treatment.

Hey

Drinkrum, thanks for all the info. I have one more question though. Since other hairs that are not affected by DHT can shed do to Finestride can they also become more sensitive to DHT in the process.....upregulation I think it's called. Have you heard or read any info on this. I hate to use this stuff for a year + then have to stop and be worse off than if I hadn't started.
