I've been taking 1mg Finasteride for about 5 months now and have been thrilled with the results. It took about 2 months of very light shedding, then the shedding stopped and my hair completely stopped falling out. I experienced a decent amount of regrowth. I only see maybe two or three hairs per day in the sink. The hair growth has pretty much stopped now, and I think this is about as good as it will get with Propecia. My dad and uncle went completely bald by the time they were 30, so I'm afraid that Propecia will stop working sooner or later.
Since earlier is better, I'm considering starting Dutasteride before it continues. I have two concerns, the first being that it is still basically an experimental treatment for hair loss. I remember reading about some of the earlier experimental DHT inhibitors (prior to Proscar) that never made it to market. They reduce DHT serum, but are ineffective at treating BPH (and possibly hair loss?), which makes me think that they still don't have a good grasp on how it all works. There are also no long-term studies (2+ years) on hair loss and Avodart, as far as I know.
If I start taking it and my hair starts falling out, I won't know if it's ineffective or if I'm going through a shedding period. I would hate to lose what I've gained/saved from Propecia.
Is there anyone here who is taking both Propecia and Avodart together? I understand that this might not be the best idea, but at least I'll be able to tell if Avodart works without risking losing the hair I currently have. Once the Avodart has had time to be effective (6-9 months or so), I can stop the Propecia and see if I lose hair. If anyone is doing this, any side effects? I understand that this is a somewhat risky prospect, and there are no studies on safety reguarding combinations, but I know I'm going to lose it all if I'm not careful.
Are there any Propecia responders here that responded even better to Avodart? Any people that responded worse?
