Not sure about hair loss, but vitamin D is certainly beneficial for skin among other things. I have always been fairly deficient and have started taking Cod liver oil.

Yes, I'm also taking cod liver oil because it's a healthy fat, but I noticed it also contains vitamins A & D, it's probably a very high-quality form of vitamin A&D as well.

There's no reason to be deficient in Vitamin D unless you live in a zone without much sunlight. Surely your house has windows, just open then up and bath in the sunlight for 15 minutes a day.

A relative of mine has pre-osteoperosis and was prescribed vitamin D. I emailed this to his wife yesterday:

*********

If you look on this webmd page for vitamin D under the tab "uses", you'll see it's listed as "effective" and "likely effective" for a whole range of medical conditions:
http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-929-vitamin d.aspx?activeingredientid=929

WebMD is normally very conservative, for most substances there is nothing under "effective".

Examine.com has a good review of pubmed for vitamin D here:
https://examine.com/supplements/vitamin-d/

Their editor says this:
If there's only one supplement you're taking for your health and your diet is decent, it should probably be Vitamin D. I highly recommend taking Vitamin D instead of a multivitamin most of the time.

That's a website that reviews lots, probably thousands, of supplements, so that's very high praise.

The fact that vitamin D supplementation is incredibly successful in studies suggests to me that a whole lot of people are deficient in vitamin D.

If getting it was easy, the effect of supplementation would be nil or negative.

What is the evidence though vitamin D deficiency directly causes male pattern baldness though?

I am a woman and i am deficient in both D and Iron...Iron is often touted as being a 'cause' of womens hair loss and their is so much debate on this..i think for some its possible yes but i think for most its an added accelerator to Androgenetic Alopecia.
Maybe Vitamin D is as well as both are needed for healthy hair growth.

i think its more likely if your deficient it probably makes hair loss happen faster or sooner BUT i dont think its often the solo cause. Probably easier for DHT to attack healthy hair if its already struggling with getting enough nutrients.

I have this curiosity if men who don't take to treatments well and/or have defuse thinning if their ferritin is not high enough.
They know this to be true with women statistically (from studies i read)

i read a paper by Dr George Costarellis and i got impression that a good ferritin level is needed to make hair loss treatments more effective. I did not have impression this was just about women but more common in women to have low ferritin.

this is just my thoughts/curiosities and a bit off topic.

I would get Vitamin D up but i would also not count on your hair growing back without aid of other treatments.

if it does thats fantastic and please let us know.

not enough (or any) studies are down on vitamin deficiencies and hair loss treatments.
Example would be someone with Androgenetic Alopecia and low D on minoxidil compared to someone with Androgenetic Alopecia normal D on minoxidil...etc etc.
