post the photos if you got em. Sign up for an account at http://photos.yahoo.com/ Its free i think, and just link from there. If you have male pattern baldness i'd say at the least purchase nizoral shampoo. However post pics and then i'd much rather comment on other things to take.

I've said it before, I'll say it again... I recommend all newbies begin their hairloss treatment with minoxidil (sold as rogaine/regaine or preferably generic). It's the fastest acting treatment (give it 4 months) and you're not F-ing with your hormones as you are with finasteride (propecia/proscar). If minoxidil isn't giving you the desired results after 4-6 months consider finasteride.

If you're outside the US, you may have trouble getting 5% minoxidil, in this case use 2%, it should give you around 60% the results that 5% minoxidil would, assuming you're a responder. If it's too much of a pain in tha *** to apply minoxidil twice a day, try to use 5% once daily before bed.

Just about every chain of drugstores/grocery stores sells a generic minoxidil solution, best to use money-wise and just as effective as name brand rogaine. You can also buy it several places online. I just ordered a 4 month supply of Kirkland 5% minoxidil from a guy on ebay for $33 incl. shipping.

Lotsa guys also like theraputic/medicated shampoos like nizoral, neutrogena t-gel or dandruff shampoos with zinc, these won't grow hair but it's important to maintain good scalp condition.

Hope this helps,

NT

I have to disagree.

You can't reccomend a rogaine start to everyone because everyone is balding differently. For a full top diffuse thinner rogain may not be the first good step. It really was a mistake for me!

I would say that for full top diffuse thinners, finasteride + spironolactone + nizoral (Folligen for a boost) is a GREAT way to start off. Then add rogaine if you dont see results.

Rogaine will regrow the most hair if it works, so if you are only looking to maintain with a little regrowth, why start with rogaine?

I gotcha bomb, the main reason I think minoxidil is best to try first is because it works fastest. People only need to commit to it for 4 months.

I've heard you should wait as long as 1-2 years to judge spironolactone or finasteride, and if messing with your hormones can be avoided, I consider that a plus too.

I too am a diffuse thinner, but for me, my hairline got lots worse while using just finasteride, and it was very hard for me to judge how well (or even if) it was working over the top. I had been on finasteride alone for almost 3 yrs, decided to quit last february and now after 9 months on minoxidil my hair is better than it's been in years.

I will say that I do think finasteride was maintaining hair or the top of my head. About 6-7 months after stopping finasteride I started shedding alot from the top, for this reason I started back on .5mg finasteride in september.

Sadsad - I use T-gel Stubborn Itch Control two days out of three (the other day is nizoral). On the days I use t-gel, I really think my hair is pretty soft and not very dead. However, on that third day (the Nizoral day), it usually is pretty dry. It's a trade off, but at least I get 2/3 of my time with soft hair :)

Sad Sad:

One thing that I believe is crucial to keeping your hair looking good is nutrition. Although nutrition in and of itself does not cause male pattern baldness, I have read a few articles saying that the internal triggers in your body that cause the male pattern baldness to take its course are very much affected by your nutrition, i.e. poor nutrition generally speeds the ageing process of your body, which generally speeds your male pattern baldness.

Additionally, poor nutrition generally affects the health and look of all of your body surfaces, gives you poor complexion, brittle nails, and prematurely brittle hair.

In addition to any chemical hair loss treatment you decide to start, I strongly suggest you commit to eating well, and perhaps even add in a good multivitamin.

Here's another reason I'm for starting with minoxidil, look at this current thread from HLH-

http://www.hairlosshelp.com/forums/mess ... 95&start=1

I've seen countless posts from finasteride users over the years who swear it's made things worse for them, or can't tell if it's working after extended periods o'time.

BTW, I post at hlh as 'LetsGetHairy'

i had always thought about starting finasteride to maintain my hair, cause it was slowly getting thinner, but recently it started shedding more, and getting thinner quicker. if i had started finasteride before, because of the thinning, and then all of a sudden my male pattern baldness picked up like it has i may have attributed it to finasteride, and freaked out and stopped. the point is that i think its hard to truly say if it gets worse for people while they're on it. male pattern baldness might just get more agressive or what not.
