What exactly does aloe vera extract do to hair?

Can it actually promote hair regrowth?

Not likely given its lack of scientific backing for this use. Nice plant though, and generally very useful for sunburn and other related uses.

Bruce,

Absence of scientific backing doesn't mean it doesn't work. Acupuncture has never had any and it works great for a lot of conditions.

I didn't say that Aloe doesn't work. How could I know that for sure? I said it was unlikely to work given that there is very little science supporting its efficacy for male pattern baldness. I used aloe vera gel on my hair back in the early 80s and got no response at all. Proves nothing really.

Hell, Cow sh*t on your head COULD work but I ain't going there. Re: Accupuncture, it may work or not. It did nothing for my back pain, and it is supposed to work on back pain.

The only way you get around the placebo effect is to do some double blind studies. None that I know of for aloe vera and male pattern baldness

Aloe vera is a great anti-inflammatory, especially when used in conjunction with shampoos like Nizoral. It soothes the scalp nicely from using Minoxidil too. I doubt it actually forces your hair to grow the way Minoxidil does, but it definitely promotes a healthy scalp and hair, definitely a good addition to any regimen. I hear/have read you can also use Emu Oil and it works much the same way.

I actually style my hair with Aloe gel frequently, just because i find that a lot of the styling products in the grocery/drug store are pretty harsh and make my hair fall out faster. It doesn't give much hold, but it feels great and looks good.

In what form do you use Aloe, a pure gel? How do you use it, leave it on all day, wash it out etc.

Thanks

I buy a bottle of 98% pure Aloe gel ($15 CDN for 500ml, it lasts me about 6 months). Occasionally (about 2 or 3 times a week) I use it with my Folligen application at night after minoxidil. I also use it often after my morning minoxidil app. I just leave it on all day/night. Scalp feels great after using it. You can pretty much mix any styling product with it too if you need more hold.

It also works great for cuts, scrapes and burns!
